This series publishes monographs and carefully edited books inspired by the
thematic conferences of ECCOMAS, the European Committee on Computational
Methods in Applied Sciences. As a consequence, these volumes cover the fields of
Mathematical and Computational Methods and Modelling and their applications to
major areas such as Fluid Dynamics, Structural Mechanics, Semiconductor
Modelling, Electromagnetics and CAD/CAM. Multidisciplinary applications
of these fields to critical societal and technological problems encountered in
sectors like Aerospace, Car and Ship Industry, Electronics, Energy, Finance,
Chemistry, Medicine, Biosciences, Environmental sciences are of particular
interest. The intent is to exchange information and to promote the transfer between
the research community and industry consistent with the development and
applications of computational methods in science and technology.

Christophe Hermans (1960–2021)
On 24 January 2021, Christophe Hermans,
Director the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels
DNW passed away suddenly and very
unexpectedly. As he organized as a co-chair a
Special Technology Session and contributed
actively to the WCCM-ECCOMAS Virtual
Congress 2021 in early January 2021, it is
only fair that this book be dedicated to
Christophe Hermans. He was not only one of
our best aeronautics professionals, very
supportive to the ECCOMAS and CEAS
congresses as well as of the collaboration
between those two associations, but also
because one could not work with him without
gradually becoming a friend. He had such a
way to embark upon a project or tackle a
problem that very quickly one realized that he
had one single objective: a successful
solution, no matter how difficult or tricky it
was. I often saw him bend over backwards to
propose the most intelligent and innovative
solutions at the limit of his own margins. And
without playing with words, he always
remained objective in working at it, putting
all personal matters aside while still
managing to sincerely respect all personal
agendas, whatever they might be! He was so
straightforward that trust between
participants in any meeting soon was the
name of the game. Never have I seen a better
picture of the famous aphorism that the
French industrialist and humorist Auguste
Detoeuf put in the mouth of ‘Oscar Louis
Barenton, a famous ice cream producer’: A
lie is never necessary, rarely useful and
always dangerous.
No wonder Christophe was relied upon in his
career and promoted to the most prominent
positions. He will be sadly missed in his
latest responsibilities as Director of DNW,
Chief Technology Advisor to NLR (the Royal
Netherlands Aerospace Centre), President of
the NVvL (the Netherlands Association of
Aeronautical Engineers) and Chairman of
the Aeronautics Branch of CEAS (the Council
of European Aerospace Societies). He even
served as the CEAS President in 2017 and
2018, not to mention so many other tasks he
was carrying in our ever so busy aerospace
world.
These include organizing and co-chairing the
Special Technology Session STS-13
Integration Challenges of New Disruptive
and Innovative Aircraft Design Solutions of
this WCCM-ECCOMAS Virtual Congress
2021. As you all know, organizing these
sessions is not that simple: identifying
knowledgeable speakers and convincing them
to take part is one thing, getting their papers
with the right content and format is another,
and managing all this in a timely manner is a
real sport! Well, Christophe had to give full
priority to this toward the end to be there just
in time, and I believe everybody was happy
with the result. However, what not everybody
may have known is that this was done in the
middle of all his other commitments, some of
the deliverables being in the crisis mode! I
still wonder how he managed, but he did it,
and I am sure he did it with his ever so
charming smile. Three papers of his session
are presented in this book.
Beyond all cultural differences, various fights
for power or any other frustrating bad
reasons, Christophe always preferred
collaboration rather than competition in all
discussions and negotiations, especially
within the scope of Europe and the laudable
efforts of the European Commission to
encourage professional aerospace
associations to cooperate more and better in
order to lead Europe into speaking with one
single voice in the face of the powerful
organizations in the USA and also in China.
The clear advantages of such a behavior are
to strengthen Europe’s position, to become
more efficient by eliminating redundant
activities and to reduce the related costs. This
is how CEAS and ECCOMAS came to know
each other and started some closer
cooperation. Christophe was not only one of
their stronger supporters but also one of their
most successful actors. But this was also true
in the more international arena, because as
harsh as any competition may be, it also
always leaves some room for cooperation.
Best examples of this were with AIAA, the
American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics, and with ICAS, the
International Council of the Aeronautical
Sciences.
Needless to say, there is a lot to do, even
more now that humankind faces two major
challenges: restoring ‘normal life’ when the
current Corona pandemic is mastered, and
mitigating the effects of global warming, both
challenges unquestionably need to be
addressed at the highest priority level by the
aerospace professionals. Both CEAS and
ECCOMAS are committed to promoting
actions for a cleaner aerospace, and they
both will act accordingly in their own areas
of responsibilities and as much as possible
together with the European Commission
through an increasing European
collaboration. Yes, I dare say we will do it
because the situation badly calls for urgent
action. I also think it will be the best tribute
we can pay to Christophe Hermans: to
continue the job in the spirit of his goals!

Preface
Introduction to the Book
The rapid digitalization of industry is bringing opportunities and challenges to large
and small industries of different sectors. The target is significantly improving the
design, production and operation processes leading, for example, to reducing the
environmental impact of air and surface transport and by this enhancing the well-
being of citizens.
The aim of this book is to provide the latest knowledge of experts in computa-
tional sciences from research institutions and different industries for exploring the
possibilities and identifying challenges of applying scientific computational methods
and tools to industrial and societal applications of different sectors, in particular
aeronautics.
Computational sciences can offer new solutions for problem solving with algo-
rithms boosted with the use of big data analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI). In
this book, some latest advances in the field will be addressed. The contributions of
this book apply computational sciences to areas such as fluid dynamics including
aero-acoustics, structure mechanics, optimization challenges and industrial applica-
tions. Many of them address not only problems of an aeronautical application, but
also cases for the application in other industry sectors are tackled.
This book provides an overview of the state of the art and technology trends
in advanced computational methods and digitalization for industrial and societal
applications.

The European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences
(ECCOMAS) was founded in 1993. ECCOMAS is a scientific organization grouping
