AdmissionstoPresbyterian-St. Luke’s
Hospital, themainreferralhospitalofthe
RushSystemforHealth,wentfrom 26,453
to26,554inthepastyear. Averagelengthof
staydecreasedfrom8.2daysto8.0days,but
remainedabovethe 1989nationalaverageof
7.3daysandreflectedthecomplexityof
medicalproblemsreferredtotheMedical
Centerfortreatment.Outpatientvisitswere
stable,goingfrom 166,507 to 166,591. Emer-
gencyroomvisits,however, increasedfrom
35,748to37,077, possiblyareflectionof
socioeconomicfactors, thatis, morepatients

respondedto 1,048callsforassistance,
offeringcrisisintervention,counseling,an
emergencyhelplineandreferralsforcom-
munityservice,medicalaidandemergency
shelters. Mostreferralsaremadethroughthe
