Foreword
The consequences of the fall of communism in 1989/1991 are still with
us today. The reworking of the international order that had been based
on the Cold War bifurcation is continuing as the US is struggling to
manage the shift from superpower to hegemonic power, and perhaps
with the rise of China back to being only one of a number of superpow-
ers. Russia struggles to find its Post-Soviet identity while many of the
former members of what was called the Eastern bloc struggle with their
membership of the EU and what that means domestically. For many of
the countries that overthrew their communist governments, the task of
establishing a political and socio-economic system that serves all of the
people remains a challenge. Economic reform, ethnic division and an
unresponsive polity remain issues in some of these countries.
Within this context, the idea of evaluating the records of former
members of the USSR and the Soviet bloc after three decades is timely.
The essays in this volume, first presented at the Fourteenth Conference
of the Australasian Association for Communist and Post-Communist
Studies in early 2019, survey the progress made following the collapse
of the communist system in Europe. Written by both established and
emergent scholars, these essays cast light on major dimensions of the

fate of the post-communist states, from economic reform through for-
eign policy, domestic dissent, citizenship, crime, the law and other areas
of life. Although there is a strong focus on Central Asia and on Russia,
attention is also given to some of the countries of Central Europe. These
papers will make an important contribution to our understanding of
the post-communist trajectories of many of the countries that formerly
made up the communist world.
