1960’s
Along with the Beatles, Barbie and the Flintstones,
the 1960’s were and important time in our history.
Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream”
speech, we saw the promise of John F. Kennedy
with his introduction of The Peace Corps and ,
“Ask not what your country can do for you but
what can you do for your country,” silenced by his
assassination in 1963. Dustin Hoffman starred in the
Graduate and the ageless James Bond first appeared.
As history has so often proven, tumultuous times
can be the breeding ground for greatness. So it’s not
surprising that amidst the drama and chaos of this
decade, Sandy Alexander was conceived and born.

Barbie turned 50 this year, and she’s been
celebrating her birthday with a whirlwind world tour.
as curvaceous and sprightly as ever, the petite doll
even paid a visit to the nation’s capital.
1960’s
1963 N. Alexander & Son formed March 1963

The predecessor to Sandy Alexander began in March of 1963 as Herb Alexander
formed N. Alexander and Sons. In 1965 N. Alexander & Sons purchased the
Bill Williams Company, retaining the same name. When N. Alexander and Sons
met and merged with Sandy Printing in 1969, the current name of
Sandy Alexander found its place in the lexicon of premier print providers
in the United States.
1970’s
At the beginning of the decade, gasoline cost 35
cents per gallon, ending the decade at a whopping
90 cents. Eight cylinder car engines roared by
with their 8 track tape players blaring Pink Floyd,
AC/DC, Queen, and Aerosmith on their way to
the opening of the first Star Wars film. Calculators
came on the scene and some of the earliest of
home computers started to make their appearance.
Barcodes proliferated and the MRI guaranteed
quicker and more accurate medical diagnosis.
Most homes boasted the Jetson-like technology
of microwave ovens and color televisions. Every
evening, parents and kids gathered around the TV
to watch the Evening News with stories of Vietnam,
Nixon and Watergate. But the somber tone of world

As the technology of the 1970’s revolutionized the home, it also played a huge role
in evolution of Sandy Alexander. In 1970, Sandy Alexander was awarded a patent
for the Unibacker Take One device and set up a distribution facility for consumer
product companies’ displays and sales aids. In 1972, Sandy Alexander installed first
Sigmagraph image manipulation machine and system and first Mailander four-color
rotary proof press.
Explosive growth was the status quo as Sandy Alexander merged with Mel Gordon’s
Admiral Press and then merged with Frank Stillo and Hal Fogel’s Carnival Press.
The decade ended with a partnership between Sandy Alexander and Elston Howard
Printing. Two long term relationships also began in the 1970’s with the acquisition
of Sandy Alexander by Mickleberry and a joint venture between Shindo Tokyo and
Sandy Alexander, beginning of our prepress department.

1980’s &
The 1980’s witnessed the first female US Supreme
Court Justice, ET, Thriller, Pac-Man, Madonna and
Springsteen’s Born in the USA. Ted Turner’s CNN
began offering the first 24 hour news cycle where
we learned of the Challenger explosion, Chernobyl
and the Exxon Valdez. It is also where we watched
Ronald Reagan’s inaugural speech and the fall of
the Berlin Wall.
By the 1990’s many western nations began an
extended a period of peace and prosperity. Hope
flourished as we watched Nelson Mandela freed.
The Soviet Union collapse, the official end of the
Cold War and the dawn of the Information Age.
The terms Internet and world-wide-web found
their way into daily conversation and the word
“surfing” took on a whole new meaning. The
50 yEars of sPiDErMaN Middle East occupied center stage with the Gulf
War and Bill Clinton served two terms as President.

In the 80’s and 90’s Sandy Alexander continued organic growth through mergers
and acquisitions. MGA, located in St. Petersburg, Florida was acquired in 1989,
establishing Sandy Alexander as a leader in direct mail, followed two years
later by the acquisition of Americom sales. Sandy Alexander’s relocation from
New York City to its current home at 200 Entin Road, Clifton, NJ provided
significantly more real estate, allowing the company to purchase its first
manroland full-web press.
2000’s
J.K. Rowling moved from relative obscurity to
international fame Harry Potter. American Idol
introduced the world to Kelly Clarkson, Carrie
Underwood and Phillip Phillips, as their songs
filled the tiny new devices known as Ipods. The
terms terrorist and al-Qaeda entered our lexicon
as the U.S. was attacked on September 11, 2001,
ending a long period of peace and prosperity.
Facebook gained in popularity and became
synonymous with the new term “social media.”
And America elected the first African American
President, Barrack Obama.
The growth of the Internet made it possible for
people to interact with each other, express ideas,
introduce different cultures and backgrounds, use
goods and services, sell and buy online, research
and learn about anything, all from the comfort of
your living room.

As the world evolved and expanded, so too did Sandy Alexander. In the first
decade of the new millennium, Sandy Alexander became a leader in innovation
and technology, entering the digital arena in with the multi-year acquisition of TBC
digital, which culminated in the full acquisition in 2008. Following this acquisition,
TBC digital was assimilated into Sandy Alexander and moved to Clifton, NJ,
allowing SA to offer customers a full array of printing platforms under one roof.
In 2009 Sandy installed its first HP Indigo digital press, raising Sandy Alexander to
a new and higher level of digital printing.
Sandy’s environmental efforts kicked off in 2005 with the commitment to a five
year contract for 100% use of wind energy technology. This move positioned Sandy
Alexander as the first major printer in the U.S. to commit to wind energy and earned
Sandy Alexander the coveted New Jersey Clean Power Purchaser of the Year Award
in 2006. Sandy Alexander further solidifies its leadership position by becoming FSC
certified and the leader in printer on paper for PCW.
As a decade finale, the sales force of Hammer Press joined Sandy Alexander bringing
a number of new sales executives, accounts and other employees to the firm.
2010’s
Apple announces the Ipad to great fanfare. One
short year later, Steve Jobs loses his battle to
cancer. Obamacare is signed into law, LeBron
James leaves Cleveland and the world watches the
Royal Wedding. The U.S. exacts justice on Osama
Bin Laden. The Arab Spring begins in Tunisia and
soon takes hold in Egypt and Libya ensuring the
liberation of millions. An earthquake in Haiti kills
300,000 and a Japanese Tsunami claims another
20,000 lives. BP leaks 4.9 barrels of oil into the
Gulf of Mexico and claims 11 lives.
Mad Men, Modern Family and Glee rule our
televisions, Avatar sweeps the Academy Awards
and the music of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga fill
the air. Technology is firmly implanted in world
culture and society is so “tuned in,” that many
worry they are “tuning out.” WiFi and HotSpots
are some of the most recent terms to enter our
cultural vocabulary.

sean Connery. george lazenby was hired for a
single film. roger Moore took over followed by
Timothy Dalton’s and Pierce Brosnan’s. Daniel Craig
debuted in 2006 and “skyfall” will mark his third

Sandy Alexander is at the forefront of this technology boom with the 2010
installation of the manroland R700 and the launch of the Wide and Grand/Retail
Visual Marketing Division. 2010 also saw the sale of the Federal Label. The next
year opened with the Sappi Printer of the Year awarded to Sandy Alexander for the
Maybelline Calendar. Later that year Sandy Alexander received a Patent Pending
designation on Moving Steps and launches the new Fulfillment Division.
This year has been one of the most eventful in our company history as Sandy
Alexander achieves SGP (Sustainable Green Printer) designation and is awarded
the What They Think! Environmental Innovator of the Year Award in March and
April respectively. For the second year in a row, Sandy Alexander wins the Sappi
Printer of the Year Award for Annual Reports. SA’s most recent accomplishment is
to be named beta site for the new HP 10000 in June.
