The first part of this book gives a detailed account of the advent of British rule in Nigeria and offers a critical assessment of both the impact of that colonial regime and the paradoxical heritage it left behind.The second part is an exposition of political, economic and social principles which are of general application. The author challenges some of the established principles of the acknowledged masters of political thought and, like them, postulates his own political philosophy.The third part is a blueprint for a suitable constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and develops the ideas set out in the author’s earlier book, Thoughts on Nigerian Constitution. Chief Awolowo, distinguished politician, lawyer and economist, was one of the three architects of his country’s independence from British Rule. He was for eight years Head of Government of the notably progressive Western Region (1952-59), and served as Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament (1960-62) before his trial and conviction on a charge of treasonable felony and conspiracy in 1963. Chief Awolowo was released from prison in August 1966. He is present Vice-President of the Federal Executive Council and Commissioner for Finance in the Federal Military Government (ed. note: when the book was published in 1968).
