JOHN CHADWICKwasbornin1920andeducatedatSt.Paul's
School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. During the war
heservedintheRoyalNavy as an Officer in the Special Branch.
Afterthewarhereturnedto Cambridge to takehis degree, then
for a time worked on the staff of the OxfordLatin Dictionary,
returning to Cambridge to lecture in Classics in 1952.
From 1952 he collaborated with Ventris in the progressive
decipherment of Linear B; he was part author with Ventris of
Documents in Mycenaean Greek. He has written articles in
various journals and newspapers, and has broadcast. He is a
corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute
of Berlin.
