Preface
This book presents, in a slightly revised form, the Mar
tin D' Arcy Lectures that I was privileged to deliver at Cam
pion Hall in the University of Oxford during the Hilary
Term of 1987.
The D' Arcy Lectures commemorate Martin Cyril
D'Arcy, S.J. (1888-1976), a literateur, philosopher, and
theologian who made a great impact on the growth of
English Catholicism during the mid-quarters of the twenti
eth century. His writings include Catholicism (1927), St.
Thomas Aquinas (1930), The Nature of Belief (1931), The
Mind and Heart of Love (1945), The Meeting of Love and
Knowledge (1957), and other works of lesser moment. Af
ter philosophical studies in Rome and London, D'Arcy
came to Oxford in 1927, to Campion Hall, the Permanent
Private Hall in the University of Oxford, where members of
the Society of Jesus resided and studied. There he began to
lecture in philosophy as a member of the Faculty of Literae
Humaniores. D' Arcy became Master of Campion Hall in
1933 and engaged the renowned architect, Sir Edwin
Lutyens, O.M., to draw up the plans for the new Hall to be
built in Brewer Street, close to Christ Church. The Claren
don Guide to Oxford describes Campion Hall as "a strik
ingly original addition to the Oxford scene, the chapel and
library being particularly good." D'Arcy remained the Mas
ter until 1945, and his own contribution to the Hall lay in
the notable collection of works of sacred art-the famous
objets D'Arcy-that he built up during his time as Master.
Thus, Campion Hall itself, its collection of art works, and
the recently inaugurated Martin D'Arcy Lectures sponsored
each year form a fitting memorial to this great English
Jesuit.

Since I have recently finished an extensive commentary
on the Lucan Gospel (The Gospel according to Luke [AB28,
28A; Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1981, 1985] pp. xxvi +
1642), one might wonder about the relation of this book to
that commentary. In the eight lectures that I was asked to
give on Lucan themes and that have become the chapters of
this book I have taken up topics that I have only lightly
treated in the commentary. But in every case I have gone
beyond what is found in the commentary, either in the man
ner of exposition and discussion or in a fresh approach to
new aspects of what is in the commentary. Moreover, what is
found in the commentary is often disjointed because of the
format of comments and notes used in it. Now a more syn
thetic and comprehensive approach to the topics discussed
has been attempted. For instance, in the discussion of Mary
in Lucan Salvation History, elements of the discussion can
be found in the commentary in scattered places; but there is
no really synthetic treatment of the matter. Again, in the
reconsideration of the Lucan authorship of the Third Gospel
and Acts I devote more time and space to certain problems
that the discussion in the commentary has raised. In this last
instance, I am indebted to Prof. John P. Meier, ofthe Catho
lic University of America, and Prof. J. Christiaan Beker, of
Princeton Theological Seminary, for a stimulating panel dis
cussion of my views at a New York seminar on the New
Testament. Much of what appears in the first chapter has
grown out of that discussion. I should like, therefore, to
express here my gratitude to them for such an interest and
stimulation. I have also tried to take into consideration mate
rials that have been written on the aspects of Lucan Teach
ing treated here since the appearance of my commentary.
