.James K. Anders
Jim Anders is a Senior Consulting Engineer with Compurer Methods
Corporation. He writes and lectures on Macintosh networking, systems
integration, and CAD/CAM topics in a variety of forums, such as the Mactivity
networking conference and the Macintosh Summit Conference. He is the
author of Technical Drawing with C/arls CAD and The Macintosh CAD/CAM
Book, as well as Hayden Books' Live Wired: A Guide to Networking Macs. He
also writes reviews and articles for MacUser magazine. For this book, Mr.
Anders contributed chapter 25, "Networking."
.Jonah Benton
Jonah is a senior in Cognitive Science at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. He has written several articles on Macintosh software and other
computer related topics. A native of New York City, a skier, and a bon vivant,
his interests include artificial intelligence, management science, and writing.
He co-authored with Barrie Sosinsky the following chapters: 6, "Printing
From Your Macintosh," 11, "Word Processors," 12, "Spreadsheets," and 26,
"Macintosh and PC Coexistence." He co-authored chapter 14, "Integrated
Programs," with Larry Hanson and Barrie Sosinsky. He also contributed
major sections of chapter 3, "Exploring the Macintosh System," and chapter
4, "How the Macintosh Works."
Christian Boyce
Christian Boyce intended to design bridges for earthquake-prone sites after
completing work at UClA and the University of Texas at Austin. Shaky times
in the earthquake engineering field led him to take a job in Southern
California's aerospace industry, where he distinguished himself by
championing prestressed concrete as a material for the Space Station.
Christian joined the Los Angeles Macintosh Group in 1987 and soon became
the Group's Director of Education. The self-described "Macintosh Consultant
to the Stars," Christian specializes in helping people take advantage of the
software and hardware they already own. He is the author of Your Mac Can
Do That! and the forthcoming Macs for Morons, both from Hayden Books.
For this book, Christian contributed excerpts from Your Mac Can Do That!
for the Interludes: "Cool PageMaker Stuff," "Cool Word Stuff," "Cool Excel
Stuff," and "Cool FileMaker Stuff," as well as for parts of chapter 2,
"Macintosh Basics."

Teresa Eagan-Morrison
Teresa Eagan-Morrison is a freelance technical writer working in the
Sacramento Valley area. She has more than 20 years experience in writing,
editing, photography, and layout and production of technical and
administrative publications, as well as the development and implementation
of communications programs. A writer of non-fiction articles, which have
been published in both international and local magazines, she now
concentrates on user's manuals and tutorials in the computer software field.
Teresa's fascination with databases began when she was introduced to a
Macintosh database while cataloging a library of writer's reference materials.
She is presently writing a manual for a Mac database program. Teresa wrote,
fittingly, chapter 13, "Databases."
Larry Hanson
Larry Hanson is a Macintosh consultant specializing in the field of desktop
publishing, an area for which he is uniquely qualified since he is also the
former owner of a typesetting company and advertising agency. In addition
to consulting, he uses his Mac to continue serving clients in the advertising
and marketing areas with creative services, and has won several "Addy''
awards for his advertising work. Hanson is an Authorized Apple Consultant
and a certified trainer on more than a dozen Macintosh applications.
Larry Hanson compiled and updated the second edition, and wrote chapters
1, "Macintosh, the Computer," and 23, "Viruses and System Security;" and co
wrote chapters 9, "Fonts and Typography," 14, "Integrated Programs," and
the Glossary. He also contributed major sections of the following chapters: 3,
"Exploring the Macintosh System," and 4, "How the Macintosh Works."
Chuck Merkle
Chuck is a Systems Engineer at Apple Computer in Indianapolis, working
primarily with Apple's K-12 customers in Indiana. Trained as a teacher, he
also has a Master's Degree in Scientific Photography and has nearly
completed a PhD in Instructional Technology from Indiana University. He's
worked with Macintosh computers since 1984, and with his Media and
Instructional Design background and a strong interest in the use of computer
technologies in education, has become one of the region's Apple Multimedia
Specialists. Chuck wrote chapter 19, "Multimedia on the Macintosh;" and
served as Technical Editor for the entire book.

David Ramsay
David, a regular columnist for MacWEEK, has been a programmer for 15
years and has developed some of the best known applications on the
Macintosh, including authoring MacPaint 2.0. Currently a programmer at
Caere Corporation, he has been heavily involved in the development of
OmniPage. His in-depth knowledge of the Macintosh and all of its capabilities
led to David's writing of chapter 5, "Macintosh Hardware: A Technical Look"
and chapter 28, "Troubleshooting."
Carla Rose
Carla is an advertising and magazine writer, a contributing editor of Portable
Computing, and a member of the board of Home and School Mac. She is the
author of Ibe First Book ofP ageMaker for the Mac and Mac On-Line, and is
currently researching a book about computers for the handicapped. She
wrote the following chapters: 7, "Graphics," 8, "Desktop Publishing
Programs," 10, "Graphic Arts Support," 16, "Education on the Mac," 20,
"Macs and the Differently Abled," and 24, "Communications and Online
Services." She co-authored with Jay Rose chapters 15, "Games For Fun," and
27, "The Macintosh Community." Carla also co-authored the Glossary along
with Larry Hanson .
.Jay Rose
Jay creates soundtracks for national advertisers including McDonald's, AT&T,
and Blue Cross. He runs his studio business almost entirely in HyperCard,
and has written many public-domain entertainment and educational stacks.
He's author of films and training guides for high-end audio manufacturers
including Bose and AKG. Jay wrote the following chapters: 17, "Sound, Music
and Speech," and 18, "HyperCard and SuperCard." He co-authored with
Carla Rose chapters 15, "Games For Fun," and 27, "The Macintosh
Community."
Steven A. Schwartz
Steven Schwartz bought his first computer in 1978-an Apple II Plus
(currently functioning as an outdoor planter at his home in Arizona). Since
that time, he has written over 500 Macintosh and Apple II-related articles. He
has been writing software reviews and feature articles for Macworld for the
past five years. Steve is the author of Hayden Books' Ibe 9-to-5 Mac, from
which his contributions to chapter 2, "Macintosh Basics," were excerpted.
Kate Sherman
Kate is an independent consultant and programmer working in San
Francisco. She has programmed on every type of computer from mainframes
to micros over the last 15 years, and began programming on the Macintosh as
soon as it was introduced. Kate wrote Chapters 21, "Utilities," 22, "Hard Disk
Management," and 29, "Programming."
Barrie Sosinsky. Ph.D.
Barrie is a well-known author of more than a dozen computer books, writer
of countless articles, and a much-sought-after speaker. For this book, Barrie
lent his special expertise in explaining complex issues in an easy-to
understand manner. He co-authored with Jonah Benton the following
chapters: 6, "Printing From Your Macintosh," 11, "Word Processors," 12,
"Spreadsheets," and 26, "Macintosh and PC Coexistence." He co-authored
chapter 14, "Integrated Programs," with Larry Hanson andjonah Benton. He
also contributed major sections of the following chapters: 3, "Exploring the
Macintosh System," and 4, "How the Macintosh Works."

Christian Boyce
As the author of the Interludes and parts of chapter 2, Christian's biography
is included above. In addition, he provides his own view of what's good,
what's bad, and what should be different about the software he discusses.
Guy Kawasaki
Guy Kawasaki is the former director of software product management for
Apple Computer, Inc. In this position, he cajoled, coerced, and convinced
software and hardware companies to create products for a computer that
didn't have enough RAM, a hard disk, color, slots, an installed base, technical
support, or marketing.
He has a BA from Stanford in Psychology ("the easiest major I could find")
and an MBA from UCLA ("because Stanford rejected me'). While he waits for
