Abstract EpanlaopacaFSIHERisredescribedandillustratedbasedonthetype
specimenspreservedintheNatural HistoryMuseum, London,andistransferredtothe
genusMo1olchoepanla.AnewspeciesrelatedtoopacaisdescribedfromQueenslandof
North East Australia. Thecharacteristicsof the genusMole,choepaniaare brieftyde-
scribed,andachecklistofallthemembersofthegenusisprovided.
Introduction
Mo1orchoepanlaPfc isasmallmo1orchinegroupestablished on thebasisofan
Indochinesespecies,EpanlabarbieriPfc,andonlyfivecongeners haveso farbeen
knowntooccurinEasttoSoutheastAsia.Althoughoriginallydescribedasasubgenus
apoasr of pama, Moforc ンoepam show close relationshi t Mote,,c(cid:0)s thn pama
inthebasicstructureoftheprothorax.ThegeneraMotel・choepaniaandMo1orchusare
commonintheautapomorphy inthetribe; that is,“pleuralprocesswidelyseparated
and furcasternumofcoxalcavitieslessdevelopedbehind”(NIIsATo,1986, 1992).It is
doubtlessduetotheindependencyofthegenus,sincethehindwingofMo1olchoepanla
lacksthe3Aveinwhichisalsoautapomorphyofthisgenus.AdultsofMo1orchoepa-
nlaarealmostalwaysfoundonthefreshlydeadvinesandtwigsofhostplants,anddo
notassociatewiththeflowersasthoseoftheothermembersoftheMo1orchini.
InthecourseofmystudyofthetribeMo1orchini, Ihavecontinuouslymadere-
searchesonthetypespecimenspreservedin foreignmuseums.Atanopportunityto
visittheNaturalHistoryMuseum,Londoninthewinterof1999,I foundapairofthe
typespecimensofEpaniaopacaFISHERdescribedfromJavainthecollection.Untilthat
time,Ihadknownthespeciesonly fromFISHER'soriginaldescription,andsimply con-
sidereditasomewhataberrantspeciesofEpania.Tomysurprise,theJavanesespecies
inquestionhastheMo1orchoepanla-1ikefacies,andsoonitbecameevident thatEpa-
nlaopacaactuallybelongstoMotel・choepanlabyacarefulcomparativeexamination
madeundermicroscope. Epanlaopacanot only has the forecoxal cavitieswidely
openposteriadbut alsohasno3A veinofthehindwing. Besides, l also founda fe-
malespecimen fromQueenslandwhichisclosely allied toopacapreserved in the
samecabinet.
Inthefollowinglines,IwilltransferEpanlaopacatothegenusMotel・choepanla

and carefully redescribe it on thebasis of the type specimens, newly describe a
Queenslandspeciesrelatedtoopaca,andthenbriefly discussonthegenus Mo1or-
choepanlaandlistupallthenominatespeciesofthegenus.

Thisgenusischaracterizedbyacombinationofthefollowingfeatures:
Bodyrathershortandbroa ratherthickinprofilewithrelativelyshortantennae
intheMo1orchini.Colouralmostalwaysuniformly browntoblack,dull ingeneral,
withoutanymaculationonelytra,thoughsometimeswithpalebandsonventrites1-2.
Hairsandpubescencedense,particularlyonelytra.Headlargeandvoluminous,well
convex,withraised frons,lower lobesofeyessmallandwidelyseparatedfromupper
ones,genaevery deep.Antennae11-segmente slightly longer ( )or fairlyshorter
( )thanbody,notsoslendertowardsapicalsegments,denselyclothedwithminutepu-
bescenceonsixapicalsegments.Pronotumlargeanddistinctlytransverse,simplyar-
cuateatsides,moderatelyconstrictednearapexandbase,notborderedalongapical
margin,withdiscmoreor lessuneventhoughwithoutanycallosities,asperateonsur-
face.Scutellumsmall, triangular.Elytrastronglyreduced,notattainingtothebaseof
abdominal tergite,broadlyroundedatapices,withdiscasperateorgranulateonsur-
face,usually denselyhairednear base.Hindwingsratherbroad, lesselongate,with
simplebutdistinctvein tA3十2A,andwithoutvein3A.Prosternumwith forecoxal
cavitiesdistinctlyangulateexternally,widelyopenposteriad(furcasternumlessdevel-
opedposteriad),presternalprocessdeeplyconcavenearmiddle,andvisibleonlyattri-
angularbaseandcompressedapex.Midcoxalcavitiesbroadlyopentometepisterna.
Abdomensomewhatbroadthoughlessreduced.Legsrelatively longandnotsostout,
withhairyhindtibiae.Medianlobemoderatelyelongate,withapical lobemoderately
convex andbroadly truncateat apex, rather longmedianstruts. Tegmenwithbroad
uni1obedparamere.
Range. Japan (Kyushu, TsushimaIsis., Izu-NiijimaIs.,Ryukyus,etc.), China
(Shaanxi), Taiwan, Indochina (Vietnam, Laos and Thailand), Indonesia (Java and

sinceanundescribedspeciesofthegenuscollectedfromtheislandisinmycabinet.
Notes. ThoughestablishedasasubgenusofEpanla,Mo1orchoepanlaisconsid-
ered to be an independent genus in recent arrangements (HAYAsHl, 1974, l984;
KUsAMA&TAKAKUwA,1984;NIIsAT0,1986,1992).Thegenushasratheracloserela-
tionshiptothegenusMo1orchusthantoEpanla,becauseof therelativelysmalleyes
and the widely open fore coxal cavities (less posteriorly deve1oped furcasternum)
whichareautapomorphyofthegeneraMo1orc/1usandMo1orchoepaniain thetribe
Mo1orchini.Epanlaisafairlyderivativegenusand formsasister-groupofthegenus
Glaphyt・a; both thegenerahavewelldeveloped furcasternumandexternally recog-
nizedontheposteriorlyclosed forecoxal cavities. Theexternalsimilaritiesbetween
Mo1orchoepanlaandEpanlamaybecausedbyparallelevolutionamongthedifferent
lineagesofthesametribe. It isevident that theindependency of thegenusMo1or-
choepanlainbothmorphologyandecologycanberecognizedbeyondalldoubt.The
membersofgenushaveno3Aveinofthehindwingwhichisaderivativecharacter in
thetribe. Theadultsofthegenusarealmostalwaysactiveonthe freshly deadhost
plantsanddonotvisitflowersincontrasttotheothermembersofthetribe.
Thegenuscontainseightspecies includinganundescribedspecies andwidely
occurs from East Asia viaSoutheast AsiatoNortheast Australia.

Female. Colour almostuniformly brown, partly infuscate,slightly dull;head
brown,blackalongsidesandfrontalmarginofclypeus,somewhatinfuscatenearver-
texandtempera,gulalightyellowishbrown;apicesofmandiblesandpalpiyellowish
brown;antennaeunico1oredbrown;pronotumbrown,irregularly infuscateonthedisc,
andalsowithblackbasalmargin;scutellumblackishbrown;ventralsurfaceunicoIored
brown, though lightyellowishbrownonprosternum,whiteinventrites1-2ateach
baseandapical1/3; legsbrown.
Headmoderately voluminousthoughnotsoconvex, rather distinctly narrower
than pronotum, almost entirely covered with close and rather small reticulations,
densely with paleerect hairs, HW/PA 1.05, HW/PW 0.81; fronsslightly narrowed
apica ratherstronglyarcuateatsides,almost attened,slightlydepressednearposte-
riorpartincludingvertex,shallowlyconcavealongmidline,witharcuateapicalmargin
ratherdistinctlyproducedat themiddle,FL/FB0.48,FB/FA1.13;clypeus largeand
transverse,nearly2/5ofbasalwidth,weaklyemarginateatapical margin;genae3/4
thedepthof lowereye-lobes,moderatelyraisedincludingtempera;eyesmoderatein
size,ratherweaklyprominent,withupperlobesseparatedfromeachotherby13/20the
widthofocciput.Antennaefairlylongforamemberofthegenus,0.65timesaslong
asbody,notsoslender,distinctlythickenedapicad,distinctlybroadenedand attened
inapicalsevensegments,moderatelyclothedwithshortbrownishhairsinsegments
1-5, and with dense minute brownpubescence in segments 5-11; scapeweakly
clavate,somewhatdepresse almostequal inlengthtosegment3;segment2strongly
reducedandthickenedatapex;segments3and4thickenedatapex,theformeralittle
morethan3/4thelengthofthelatterwhichisthelongest;segments5-10slightlyde-
creasinginlength;terminalsegmentbluntlypointedatapex.
Pronotumtransverseglobose,almostcompletelyroundedatsides,widestatmid-
dle,stronglyconstrictedat apexandbase,PL/PA t 20, PB/PA 1.03, PL/PW 0.95,
PW/EW0.97,PL/EL0.91;apexweaklyarcuate,verynarrowlybordere a little nar-
rower thanbase;baseverystronglyre?exedandweaklyemarginatenear themiddle,
distinctly bordered; discmoderatelyconvexthough attened inprofile, stronglyde-
pressednear basal collar,withsurfaceirregularlyuneven,providedwithsmall and
closereticulationsinmostpart,denselywithlongerectbrownishhairs,andalsowith
dense recumbent, silvery white pubescence along basal margin. Scutellum small,
roundedatapex,denselypale-pubescent.
Elytradistinctlybroad,stronglyreduced,barelyreachingapical1/5ofmetathorax,
widest atbasal t/4, rathernarrowlyandstraightly dehiscent inapical1/3,distinctly
borderedalongapical thirdofbothexternalandsuturalmargin,EL/EW 1.03; sides

hindtarsalsegmentnearlytwiceaslongasthefollowingtwosegmentscombjned.
Bodylength108mm.
Male. Colouruniformlydarkbrown,slightlyreddishonventer,atleastinhind
body,withoutwhitebandsonabdominalsternites.Elytrasimilartothoseof female,
though narrower, with humeri moderately expanded, apices completely rounde
EL/EW0.88;discwithwideobliquedepressionfrombasal t/3nearexternalmarginto
apical1/3ofsuture,puncturedandpubescentasin female,thoughsupplementarily
providedwithdensesilverywhitepubescenceatatriangularpart inbasal4/7near
scutellum.Ventralsurfacealmostasin female,thoughsilverywhitepubescence fairly
denseat thesidesofventrites. Legsslightlylongerandstouterthanin female.Body
length7mmaccordingtoFISHERs' originaldescription(headandprothoraxaremiss_
ingintheholotypeexamined).Malegenitalianotexamined,becauseofthepoorcon_
clitionofthespecimen.

Notes. Thisisaveryuniquespeciesinhavingrobusthabituswith large fore
body, theapicallythickenedantennaeand thewhitishbasalsegmentsof the female
ventrites.Thesecharacteristicsarenotobservedintheothercongenersofthegenus.
However, thisspeciesbelongstothegenusMo1orchoepanlabeyondalldoubt,since
suchautapomorphyofthegenusasthesmalleyes,thelessdevelopedfurcasternumof
theforecoxalcavities,thesimplyarcuatesidesofpronotum,andlackofthe3Avein
ofthehindwingareallpresent.
Mo1orchoepanlaopacacombnov.islittleknownspeciessinceonlyapairofthe
typespecimenswereexaminedatthepresenttime.Noadditionalspecimenhasnotyet
beenobtainedfromJavainaboutpastseventyyears.

abdominalventrites1-2.
Female. Colour dark yellowishbrown todark reddishbrown,weaklyshiny;
headdarkreddishbrown,infuscatealonganteriormarginoffronsandgenae,andalso
longitudinallyreddishnearmidlineofgula;apicesofmandiblesandpalpiyellowish
brown,eyesblack;antennaeyellowishbrownatleastinscapeandsegment2;prono-
tumdarkreddishbrowntoreddishbrown,withblackasperations;scutellumyellowish
brown;elytrayellowishbrown,withblackishasperation;prosternumreddishbrown,

sides,moderatelyandevenlyconvex,withsimplyarcuateapicalmargin,FL/FB0.68,
FB/FA 1.04;clypeusmoderate, transverse,nearly 1/4 thebasal width,gently emar-
ginateatanteriormargin;genae3/4thedepthoflowereye-lobes,weaklyraised;eyes
relativelylarge,moderatelyprominent,withupperlobesseparatedfromeachotherby
2/3 thewidthofocciput; vertexandocciput distinctly raised. Antennaewithscape
weaklydilatedapica depressed(mostsegmentsaremissingintheholotype).

andslightly emarginatenearmiddle; discmoderately convex, inprofile attened in
apical1/4,thenstraightlydeclinedtobasal t/10,unevenabove,providedwithanindis-
tinctswellingatmiddleofapical3/10andapairofswellingsatsidesofbasal1/5;sur-
facemoderatelyprovidedwithsmallasperation,clothedwithpalehairs,thehairspar-
ticularlydenseatsides,andalsowithdensesilverywhitepubescenceatwholesides.
Scutellum relatively large,moderatelynarrowed toapexwhich is rounded, densely
clothedwithsilverywhitepubescence.
Elytramoderatelybroad,stronglyreduce almostreachingtheleve1ofhindcoxal
cavities,notsostronglynarrowedapicad,widestatbasal t/3,straightlydehiscent in
apical 1/2, indistinctlyborderedorsimpleat least nearapices,EL/EW 1.00; sides
ratherstronglyexpandedathumeri,weaklyarcuatetojustbeforemiddlethenweakly
andarcuatelyconvergenttoapiceswhicharenarrowlyrounded; discuniformlycon-
vex,moderatelyraisednearsuturebehindscutellum,alongobliquepartsfromhumeri

eageasM.opacacomb nov.,andshareswiththelattersuchuniquecharactersasthe
largeanddistinctlyglobularpronotum, thewideandstrongly reducedelytra, and
whitishventrites1-2.Thethickenedapicalsegmentsoftheantennaemayalsobecom-
moninthetworelatives,butIwasunabletorecognizethischaractersinceboththean-
tennaearemissingintheholotypeofthenewspecies.Mo1orchoepanlaalbiventrissp
novandM.opacacombnovmaycomposeaspecies-groupinthegenus.
Thisnewspecies isthefirst representativeofMo1orchoepanlaknown fromthe
AustralianSubcontinent,andalsothesouthernmost inhabitantof thegenus. 0nly a
singlefemalespecimen inaverypoorconditionwasunfortunatelyexamined.How-
ever,Idescribeditinviewofitspeculiarityandaffinityofthespecies.Thenewname
isderivedfromthewhitebaseoftheventritesofthespecies.
