Chapter 782: Meeting

"You thought you were so formidable, yet you still fell into the hands of me, Nancy. This time, I want you to have no return," Nancy whispered. The only person in the room, a woman who was like Nancy’s shadow, heard Nancy’s words just now, but she seemed entirely familiar with Nancy’s demeanor, showing no change in expression, as if she saw nothing.
Nancy didn’t see it, and she wouldn’t have seen it; thus, she had no idea that after she hung up the phone, the expression on Xu Ke’s face, the smile on his face, became exceptionally profound and emitted a terrifying aura.
"Things are getting more and more interesting. I just wonder why you came looking for me," Xu Ke said in a low voice.
An invisible large net unfolded between Xu Ke and Nancy, only it was uncertain who this net would ultimately entangle.
Time flew by rapidly, and soon it was the time agreed upon by Xu Ke and Nancy. The meeting place was another motel in the town, which, compared to the other two where Xu Ke had stayed, was especially far away, almost at the town’s outskirts. Yet Xu Ke seemed oblivious, checking into a room under his name at the motel as per their prior arrangement.
No one knew whether Nancy had planted a monitoring device on Xu Ke; she wasn’t there when Xu Ke checked in, but once he did, she arrived.
"I hope I’m not late," Nancy said, removing the wide-brimmed hat from her head.
"No, you came just in time; I had just gotten the room ready when you arrived," Xu Ke said, looking at Nancy with a half-smile expression.
Nancy acted as if she didn’t hear the underlying meaning in his words. Her face still bore a fragile and pallid smile, even coughing softly twice, as if she weren’t feeling well, "Since I’m not late, let’s go upstairs first. My chest feels a bit uncomfortable; staying here feels even worse."
Xu Ke stretched out his mouth into a grin, revealing his white teeth, and extended his hand to lead Nancy, "Let’s go, then."
Hearing Xu Ke’s words, Nancy’s face also sported an appropriate smile. The two exchanged a glance and a smile, each layering the smile with more meaning.
Under the teasing gaze of the owner, Xu Ke and Nancy walked upstairs one after the other and entered the hotel room.
"What is it you wanted to talk about? Just say it," Xu Ke said straightforwardly, pouring Nancy a glass of water.
"I heard you’ve been having some trouble lately. I can help you completely solve these problems," Nancy glanced at the glass of water but showed no intention of touching it.
"In our country, there’s an old saying: ’No gain without pain.’ You’re offering to help me; I wonder what for. What is it that you want from me?" Xu Ke played with the glass in his hand.
"That’s right, I wouldn’t help you for no reason. I’m always partial, only helping my own," Nancy raised her eyebrows, looking at Xu Ke as she spoke.
"Why did you choose me, then? I don’t see myself as anything special to be worth all of you coming one after another to bother or recruit me. I’m just an ordinary person," Xu Ke’s face showed a look of puzzled frustration.
Seeing Xu Ke’s expression, Nancy let out a cryptic chuckle, "What you said is rather hypocritical. The fact that Claude has taken an interest in you is proof enough that there’s something unusual about you. Even if you’re not excellent, you’re much stronger than the average person. I trust Claude’s judgment; there’s never any waste around him."
Looking at Xu Ke, Nancy spoke softly, trying to catch him off guard with an expression, but she was disappointed. Xu Ke’s expression remained unchanged. Yet thinking about it from another angle, Nancy felt relieved — if a person could so easily let slip an expression, they wouldn’t be worth her effort to win over.
"Moreover."
"Moreover, I’ve demonstrated my capabilities in recent times to prove not only my abilities to you but also your ability to judge people?" Xu Ke interrupted Nancy, adding piece by piece to what she had yet to finish saying.
Nancy was momentarily stunned, clearly not expecting Xu Ke to interrupt her, but it didn’t matter since what Xu Ke said was precisely what she intended to express. She nodded in agreement.
"You’re right, I’ve told you my intentions; now, what’s your choice?" Nancy asked, looking into Xu Ke’s eyes.
"I’d advise you to think carefully. Your recent experiences, we’ve all seen them, including the one you’re following. So, what now? Is that person truly worthy of your loyalty? He has you working in that lousy factory, ignoring all the difficulties you’ve encountered, including the hitman incident. I think you understand in your heart that he doesn’t trust you, and continuing with him leads nowhere," Nancy added.
"You make a very valid point, but there’s one issue I can’t ignore. Even if Claude’s done me wrong in this matter, I’ve chosen him. If I abandon him just because of this minor trouble and come running to you, would you genuinely accept me? Aren’t you afraid I might turn to someone else in the future?"
Xu Ke’s questions were sharp. Upon hearing them, Nancy’s expression momentarily stiffened.
Xu Ke’s eyebrow arched slightly into a barely visible arc, "Could it be you’re trying to recruit me just to reduce a competitor, not really intending to put me to use, but simply to diminish Claude’s aid?" Xu Ke countered.
This counter left Nancy speechless. She only wanted to snatch Xu Ke away but hadn’t thought about what to have him do afterward. Anyone who could easily betray a former ally couldn’t be entirely trusted, as who knew when he’d betray her.
Nancy’s gaze flickered when she looked at Xu Ke.
"See, you say I have a future with you, but you’d be suspicious of me. Deep down, you don’t trust me; you don’t plan for me to work for you. Let me think, if I really abandon Claude for you, my best outcome would be becoming an invisible entity under you, doing things much like I’m doing now. In a worse scenario, you might wait until I’m forgotten to eliminate me, making me disappear from this world, right?" Xu Ke questioned again.
Nancy licked her lips, suddenly unsure of what to say; she even wondered if Xu Ke possessed a superpower to see through hearts, as he seemed to always guess her thoughts.
"Did I hit the mark?" Xu Ke raised his eyebrow once more at Nancy, whose usually thick-skinned demeanor faltered.
