Chapter 536 - 535: The Diversity of Lifeforms (Second Update)

The grin on Fang Yu’s face froze as he heard those words after barely surviving the ordeal.
What a good junior disciple he had, even at a time like this, still asking for his bank card password, really deserved a smack!
"Why don’t you just get lost!"
The person who was confronted lightened up immediately upon hearing Fang Yu’s words, shouting, "It’s definitely my Senior Brother Fang!"
That shadow, looking rather pitiful from the beating, was quickly rolled into a ball about the size of a volleyball by several Little Papermen working together.
Ginsengfruit rummaged through their bag and then pulled out a specially made Sealing Talisman Paper, sticking it onto the balled-up shadow.
What initially appeared as a murky gray ball turned instantly into a thin sheet of paper upon successful sealing.
"Master, it’s sealed!"
Yun Ran received it and then took out an empty-looking booklet, into which she collected the thin sheet of paper.
She then tossed the booklet to Ginsengfruit for safekeeping, as there was no need for her to carry around a booklet sealed with a small spirit.
The others watched this scene in amazement but dared not utter a word for fear of offending Yun Ran.
Fang Yu had somewhat recovered by now and met Yun Ran’s scrutinizing gaze with a bit of embarrassment.
"Speak up, what did you do back at the swamp to get this spirit’s attention!"
This spirit wasn’t very lethal but was extremely adept at mimicking humans, able to silently replace the chosen individual.
Fang Yu wasn’t stupid; he was the only one among their group who got targeted, clearly because of something he did earlier.
After being rescued, he had replayed the past events in his mind.
The only slip was earlier when the Little Paperman was sent by Yun Ran to check the swamp, he seemed to have heard someone calling him and accidentally responded.
Fang Yu sheepishly explained the suspicious part, obediently waiting for Yun Ran’s scolding.
Before arriving, they had been warned that this place was eerie and not to do anything unnecessary, but he still fell for it.
If it weren’t for Yun Ran, he’d likely already be a pile of bones by the swamp, while that ugly shadow would be living his life.
Yun Ran didn’t reprimand him, instead, she fetched several pieces of talisman paper stained with her blood from her bag and handed them out.
"One for each person!"
The members of the Sihui Sect hesitated a bit, but Xin Fu stepped forward, taking the talisman paper and distributing it to everyone.
"No one knows how many similar spirits are in this area. Wear these talismans, and if someone’s talisman gets activated, it means they’ve been targeted. Keep an eye on each other."
Without the imagined scolding, everyone felt uneasy holding these talismans, feeling like they had struck it rich.
The members of the Sihui Sect immediately hung the talismans prominently on their chests, so if anyone fell for it, it would be evident at a glance.
"Alright, let’s keep moving!"
The dense forest largely obscured the sunlight, leaving only some scattered rays filtering through the gaps.
The air was highly humid, laced with the scent of decaying leaves and the musty smell of the soil.
The Little Paperman flying ahead felt sticky all over and uncomfortable, giving its body a shake.
Who would have thought that this motion would alarm a swarm of flying insects?
In an instant, a cloud of flying insects surged toward Yun Ran and the others, shrouding the already scarce light.
To the naked eye, it was just a mass of darkness.
"These... these bloodsucking insects, be careful everyone!"
After yelling this, Xin Fu looked on guardedly, holding a small Flame Gun, standing directly in front of Yun Ran.
As the flying insects drew near, Xin Fu pressed the Flame Gun’s switch, spreading a burnt protein smell through the air.
The dense swarm of flying insects fell like rain, covering the mossy path, turning it pitch black.
Ginsengfruit wasn’t afraid of these insects but found them rather disgusting.
Couldn’t help but complain, "We’re just at the perimeter of the Death Mountain, can’t we catch a break? Places like this really let you appreciate the biodiversity!"
The main swarm was incinerated by Xin Fu’s Flame Gun, with some remnants still resolutely attacking Yun Ran and the others, while others scattered wildly.
Luckily, they all wore professional protective gear, including helmets with gas masks; otherwise, the insect swarm might have successfully attacked them.
The small flying insects thought they’d crossed a sea of fire and gotten close to their prey, seeking vengeance for their kin.
Unexpectedly, what awaited them was even fiercer retaliation.
With a series of crackling sounds, the small insects left no corpses, just turning into piles of ash.
The Little Paperman, irritated, cast out a spark of electricity from its wounded body, saying, "Little guys, dare to attack my master, I’ll zap you!"
The Sihui Sect members also tried to drive away the small insects, yet their actions looked comical compared to the Little Paperman’s.
Du Jun was swatting at them with his hands, surrounded by the occasional slapping sound, like swatting mosquitoes.
"How’s it going, are they all wiped out?"
Fang Yu looked at his protective suit, noting the insect fluids smeared all over, feeling utterly disgusted.
He wished he could quickly find a water source to wash off the nasty, sticky stuff.
Noticing Yun Ran and Ginsengfruit were spotless, his eyes were filled with envy.
Then looking at the Little Paperman, his gaze turned overtly admiring, especially seeing the sparks emanating from its palm, he couldn’t help but think: That’s just too cool.
If the situation were different, he’d already have taken out his phone to snap pictures of the Little Paperman’s heroic stance and post them on social media.
A loud "whack" erupted next to Fang Yu’s ear.
Turning his head, he saw the small flying insects, deterred by Yun Ran’s defenses, regrouping and swarming toward them, thick as ever.
The Little Paperman threw an electric spark at the swarm’s center, scattering their gathered forces once more.
The Little Paperman stood akimbo, staring at Fang Yu, shouting, "What are you looking at!"
Then it zipped past Fang Yu’s head, continuing its battle with the small flying insects.
Fang Yu’s eyes brightened, "Hey, I’m on it~"
After a dozen minutes, the fleeing small flying insects were all individually picked off by the Little Paperman.
With that, the swarm of insects was completely annihilated.
