Areas of Research

Roman social history, esp. marginal groups and outsiders in the Roman world, history of
crime in the Roman Empire and in cross-cultural perspective (including the sociology of devi-
ant behavior), the Latin Novel, esp. Apuleius, the Second Sophistic, Athens 4th Century BCE
(oratory, law, comedy, focus on interpersonal violence), magic (curse tablets) in connection
