I WOULD like to thank the Rev. Bill Maclean for first introducing
me to the teachings of the Pentecostal movement in 1961 and Mr.
John Busby and Dr. Eric Stevenson for first telling me about the
life and work of Edward Irving the following year. I am most grateful
to Professor John McIntyre for his teaching when I was an under­
graduate and to Professor Tom Torrance for his supervision of my
postgraduate work. Canon Roland Walls was my tutor through­
out the studies and I am greatly indebted to him for his direction,
enthusiasm and good humour. I thank the Rev. James Torrance for
his interest and friendship and the Rev. Brian Casebow for sharing
many points and for reading through and correcting the proofs.
During my researches in London I was greatly helped by Mr. R. J.
