TheUniversityoftheArtsisthenation'sfirstandonlyuniversitydedicatedto
thevisual,performingandcommunicationarts.TheUniversityevolvedfrom
twocentury-oldinstitutions:thePhiladelphiaCollegeofArt(PCA)and
PhiladelphiaCollegeofPerformingArts(PCPA).
PCAwasestablishedin 1876aspartofthePhiladelphiaMuseumofArt.
Together,theywereoriginallyknownasthePennsylvaniaMuseumandSchool
ofIndustrialArt,createdinresponsetothegrowinginterestinartandart
educationstirredbythecountry'sCentennialExposition. In 1948, PCA
changeditsnametothePhiladelphiaMuseumSchoolofArt,reflecting
expandedprogramsthattrainedartistsinavarietyofareas.
Theschoolreceivedaccreditationasacollegein 1959,andin 1964itseparated
fromtheMuseumtobecomethePhiladelphiaCollegeofArt.Theperform-
ingartsprogramsoftheUniversityoftheArtsdatebackto 1868,whenthree
graduatesofGermany'sLeipzigConservatoryopenedthePhiladelphiaMusical
Academy,oneofthefirstEuropean-styleconservatoriesofmusicinAmerica.
TheAcademybecameanindependentcollegeofmusicin 1950,oneofonly
eightinstitutionsinthenationtoofferfour-yearBachelorofMusicdegrees.
TheschoolchangeditsnametothePhiladelphiaCollegeofPerformingArts
(PCPA) in 1976.Oneyearlater,thePhiladelphiaDanceAcademybecamepart
ofPCPAand,in 1983,theSchoolofTheaterwascreated,achievingthe
college'sidealcombinationofdance,musicandtheaterarts.
In 1985,PCAandPCPAmergedtobecomethePhiladelphiaCollegesof
theArts,acollaborationbringingtheinstitutiononestepclosertobecoming
thenation'sfirstcomprehensiveartsuniversity.Afterbeinggranteduniversit)'
statusin 1987,theUniversityoftheArtsbecamethelargestinstitutionofits
kindinthenation,offeringprogramsindesign,finearts,mediaarts,crafts,
music,danceandtheater. In 1996theUniversityestablishedtheCollegeof
MediaandCommunication,offeringdegreesinCommunication,Writing
forFilmandTelevision,andMultimedia.

Introduction
TheimpetusfortheSilverStarAlumniAwardExhibitionwastoenhancethe
documentationoftheworkoftheawardrecipients.Sincewewerecelebrating
the50'''anniversaryofbecomingaCollegein 1959,' 2009seemedtobe
anexcellentyeartodoso.CelebratingtheCollegefundamentallymeans
celebratingthefaculty,students,andalumniwhocollectivelyconstitutethe

educationalprograms thealumniarethelegacyoftheschool,sofeaturing
andcelebratingtheSilverStarrecipients,thetimeframeofwhichclosely
parallelsthe50-yearanniversaryoftheCollege,seemedlikeanimportant,
worthwhile,andtimelyproject.
TheCollegeofArtandDesignSilverStarAlumniAwardrecognizesthesustained
careerachievementsofalumniartists,designers,andeducators,aswellasalumni
inpositionsofleadershiprelatedtoart,design,andeducationfelds}
Eachyear.Awardrecipientsarerecognizedatourcommencementceremony.
Theyarepartoftheplatformparty,andareintroducedwhileexamplesof
theirworksareprojected,thentheyreceivetheofficialawardcertificateand
pinandsayafewwords.Inrecentyearswehavealsoaskedtheawardrecipient
toattendtherehearsalthedaybefore,inordertodeliveramoresubstantial
messagetothegraduatingseniors.Toourknowledgetherehasneverbeena
comprehensiveexhibitionorcatalog,documentingtheworkwithbiographical
informationoftheseAlumniAwardrecipients.
TherecordsavailabletousshowthattheSilverStarAlumniAwardwasfirst
givenin 1955,whenphotographerIrvingPennandfashiondesignerTinaLeser
weresohonored.Mostrecently,theQuayBrothers,animatorsStephenand

Timothy,andillustratorRichardAmsel allthreegraduatedin 1969 were
honoredin2009.
Irealizedattheonsetthatthisprojectwouldrequireserioussleuthing.Wehad
alistofrecipientsthatincluded73names,^andsomealumnifromtheearly
yearswouldbedifficulttotrackdown.
Thisexhibitionwouldalsobequitediverseandeclectic—giventhe55years,
andthecomprehensiverangeofmajorsthattheCollegehasoffered.Over
thepast24yearssinceIhavebeendean,Ihaveworkedwiththedepartment
chairstoassurethatweattempttodistributetheawardasbroadlyacrossthe
spectrumofmajorprogramsaspossible,andIbelievewehaveidentifiedat
leastonerecipientfromallareasoftheCollegeduringthistime. >
Oneoftherealpleasuresoftheprojectwasgettingtoknowmoreaboutthe
recipientsandtheircareers. Itwasparticularlyexcitingtoseethediverseroutes
peopletookandhowtheyappliedtheirartschooleducation.Certainly,the
vastmajorityfoundtheirwaydirectlyfromtheirmajorprogramexperience,
butagoodnumberdidn'tmoveinastraightline.FormerAdvertisingmajors
becomeknownfortheirillustrationorpainting,apainterisnowrecognized
forhissculpture,anillustratorworksinthefilmindustry,andanumberof
peoplemovedintoexecutivepositionsinschools,agenciesandotherarts
organizations. Itconfirmedourlongheldbeliefsthatwhatislearnedinanarts
educationcanprepareapersonformultiplecareerpaths.
Ifeltthisprojectshouldnotonlybefocusedonsilverstaralumniwork,
butalumnishouldbeprimarilyinvolvedintheproject'sdevelopmentand
realization.IaskedalumnaTaraPoag,2008,toserveascuratorandexhibition
designer.TarareceivedherMFAinMuseumExhibitionPlanningandDesign,
andbroughtexcellentorganizationalandplanningskillstotheproject.I
invitedJoeRapone, 1978GraphicDesignand2003ArtEducation,todesign
thecatalogandexhibitionannouncement.Joehadbeeninvolvedthroughout
theCollege@50anniversaryyear,designingthe@50markandframing
guidelinesforall@50relatedpublicationsandcards.JoeisalsoanAssociate
ProfessorteachingintheCollege'sFoundationandElectronicMediaareas
andhasbeenextremelyhelpfulandgenerouswithhistime,andistheultimate
professional.JohnCarlano, 1978Photography,isahighlyregardedprofessional
photographerinthePhiladelphiaarea,inadditiontomaintaininghisown
impressiverecordasanartist.OneofJohn'sparticulartalentsisshootingfine
artworkformanyartists,soIwasverypleasedthatheagreedtoworkonthis
projectdocumentingalumniwork.JohnisalsoanAdjunctProfessorinour
Photographyprogram.
NancyBurlan,secretaryandunofficialeditorintheDean'sOffice,ledthe
considerablebackupsupportfororganizingandcommunicatingthisproject
tothealumni.Wedividedupthesleuthing,butNancydidmuchofthe
follow-upandtrackingdownofpeoplewithTaraPoag.Wealsohadback-
upsleuthingandeditingbyReginaBarthmaier,AssistanttotheDean;Sara
MacDonald,PublicServicesLibrarian(HonoraryUniversityHistorian);
AdrienneStalek,AssociateDean;andTracyFarquhar,CraftsSecretary,who
filledinforNancyoverthesummerandwentthroughallofthealumni
biographies. Ithasbeenanongoingofficeactivitythroughoutthelate
springandsummerof2009aslistswerehandedbackandforthover
vacationschedules. Irecalltheoccasionalexclaimofexcitementwh—en
someonewouldfindacontactforanunknownSilverStarrecipient and
weallfeltquitewonderfulandrewardedwhentheresponsefromafamily
memberwouldbesoappreciativethatweweredoingthisproject.
Whileweweren'tabletoincludetheworkorbiographyforeverySilver
Starrecipient,Iampleasedthatwemanagedtogetarelativelyhigh
percentage.WearealsoawarethattherearemanyotherCollegeofArt
andDesignalumniwhohavehadwonderfullysatisfyingcareers,who
havereceivedcriticalrecognitionandaccomplishedimportantwork.
WewouldhopethattheykeepintouchwiththeUniversity,sothatwe
