Ensuring food security and making safe food available
for teeming millions is a global concern. Realizing the
importance of food security and food safety, the
Government of Pakistan took timely steps to establish
the Ministry of National Food Security and Research in
the aftermath of the 18th Constitutional amendment.
The new Ministry is responsible inter-alia for economic
coordination and planning in respect of food,
economic planning and policy making in respect of
agriculture, imports and exports control on food grains
and foodstuffs, inspection, grading analysis of food
grains and foodstuffs, maintenance of standards of
quality for import and export etc.

The Government of Pakistan is focusing on Productivity
enhancement of crops and livestock and is carrying out
research to control plant and animal diseases, so as to
ensure long term food security. We have a fundamental
interest in strengthening our trade in agricultural

We are fully cognizant that our agricultural products

requirements of Sanitary and Phyto-sanitary (SPS) under
the WTO regime. In this regard, we deeply appreciate
European Union's assistance for Trade Related Technical
Assistance (TRTA II) Programme to strengthen the SPS
regime in Pakistan. We also highly appreciate UNIDO's
technical assistance under the TRTA II to NAPHIS for
drafting the Bill relating to the National Food Safety,
Animal and Plant Health Regulatory Authority, which is
being proposed to address the SPS compliance issues in
agro-based products both for export and domestic
markets.
