FOREWORD
On the oeeasion of the seventieth birthday of Adam S. van der
Woude, former Professor of Old Testament and EarIy Judaism,
former head of the Department of BibIicai Studies of the Faeulty of
Theology of the University of Groningen, and founder and former
head of the Qurnran Institute of the same Faeulty, the Institute, the
Department and the Faeulty organized a two-day Symposium
under the title: "Perspectives on the Study of the Old Testament and
Early Judaism".
The Symposium, wh ich took place at the Theologieal Faculty of
Groningen on the 17 -18th of Oetober 1997, was intended to explore
(through case studies) the developments occurring during the last
few years in the different areas of study of the Old Testament and
of Early Judaism, to signal the new perspectives opened in these
areas and to map the directions in which the research will be mo
ving during the third millennium.
The first four papers systematieally explored the Methods of
Biblical Exegesis (Talstra), the History of Israel (Lemche), Textual
Criticism (Tov) and Theology of the Old Testament (Noort). Five
other papers analyzed the new perspeetives in the study of the
Pentateuch (Seebaß), the Prophets (Jeremias), the Psalms (Spiecker
mann), Chronic1es (Beeking) and Daniel (Collins). The last three
papers dealt with developments in the study of the Apocrypha and
Pseudepigrapha (Knibb), Septuagint (van der Kooij) and the Dead
Sea Serolls (Garcia Martfnez).
The present volume offers the contributions read at the Sym
posium, in a revised form but in the original languages in which
they were presented (English or German). It also offers a German
version of the very weIl attended publie lecture on the significance
of the Dead Sea SeroIls for the study of the Old Testament and of
Early Judaism that the honoree gave in Dutch during the Sym
posium.
At the c10sing banquet of the Symposium the honoree resigned
the editorial responsibilities for the Journal for the Study of Ju
daism, whieh he founded in 1970 and eontinuously edited until the
end of 1997. On the oecasion, he was presented the first copy of the
Index to Volumes 1-27 (1970-1996) of the JSJ, as weIl as the first
eopy of The Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition, prepared at the Qum
ran Institute.
