About Nico Rost
Nico Rost, vertaler van onder meer Joseph Roth, Ernest Hemingway en Alfred Döblin (Berlin Alexanderplatz) en Nederlandse `ontdekker van Franz Kafka, zat al in 1933 gevangen in het concentratiekamp Oranienburg. Daar schreef hij het imposante oorlogsdagboek Goethe in Dachau. Hij kwam tot driemaal toe op onzachtzinnige wijze in aanraking met een Duits regime - twee keer met de Gestapo, een keer met de Stasi - maar toch bleef hij van Duitsland houden. Nico Rost (1896-1967), journalist, vertaler en literator, was kind aan huis in het Romanisches Café in het Berlijn van de Weimar Republik. Op die internationale ontmoetingsplaats van Europese intellectuelen en kunstenaars leerde hij de grote Duitse schrijvers kennen, die hij vervolgens in Nederland introduceerde. Sinds zijn eerste uitwijzing stelde Rost zijn leven in dienst van het antifascisme en zette zich in voor gevluchte Duitse schrijvers. Als geheim lid van de communistische partij was hij in de jaren dertig actief in België, waarbij hij zich soms fanatiek mengde in partijpolitieke discussies. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd Rost als een held binnengehaald in de jonge DDR. Het liep uit op een desillusie. Hij werd uitgewezen en trok zich terug in Nederland. Een van zijn laatste publikaties aldaar was De vrienden van mijn vader, een portret van de voormalige joodse gemeenschap in zijn geboortestad Groningen. Hans Olink volgde de sporen van Rost in West- en Oost-Duitsland, Zwitserland, Tsjechië, België en Nederland. Zo ontstond een schets van een geëngageerd reporter en letterkundige voor wie het contact met Duitsland en zijn literatuur een levensnoodzaak was.
