A Shocking
Performance
On August 25, 2013,
10.1 million viewers
tuned into the
2013 MTV Video Music Awards
(VMAs), broadcast live from Brooklyn,
New York.1 A star-studded audience
packed the Barclays Center. Among the
nominees set to perform were Lady Gaga,
Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and
Taylor Swift. But they were all about to
be upstaged by Miley Cyrus.

VMAs
The VMAs are awards broadcast live on MTV every
presented by cable channel year since 1984. The award
MTV to honor the year’s is a statuette in the form of
best music videos. The an astronaut on the moon,
awards ceremony has been dubbed the “Moon Man.”
Cyrus was no stranger to the spotlight. The
daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, she
had been in the public eye since birth. At age two,
she toddled onstage at her father’s performances
to meet music legends such as Aretha Franklin
and Tony Bennett. Cyrus had been a megastar in
her own right since age 12, when she burst onto
the scene playing a teen pop star on Disney’s hit
television series Hannah Montana. That show, along
with its soundtrack albums, sold-out concert tours,
and assorted merchandise, made Cyrus into a
multimillionaire. At the time, she was the richest
teenager in Hollywood.
But by 2013, Cyrus was 20 years old—not a
teenager anymore. Since Hannah Montana had gone
off the air two years before, she had been trying to
prove she was more than just a sugary-sweet pop
singer on the Disney Channel. She was ready to
