Acknowledgments
This book has been over a decade in the making and has morphed through
many forms. I started on this project as a member of the geography depart-
ment at the University of Wales Aberystwyth (now Aberystwyth Univer-
sity) and carried on the work while at Royal Holloway, University of Lon-
don, and at Northeastern University in Boston. The finishing touches have
been completed at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Needless to say,
many people from these institutions and beyond have been helpful along the
way. Particular thanks are due to two Maxwell Street enthusiasts who appear
in this book— Steve Balkin and Lori Grove— both of whom donated time,
information, walks, and energy to this project on more than one occasion.
