About LZR-1143: Evolution 2

In the midst of a zombie apocalypse, it takes a movie star to do the impossible.

Which is exactly what Mike McKnight will have to do to survive.

The dead have risen. A lethal virus has decimated millions, turning the infected into the walking dead.

Society has crumbled, cities are in flames, and the human race is on the verge of extinction.

Somehow, Mike has survived. So far. From his cell in a mental institution, he battled the ghosts of his past and throngs of undead to uncover and retrieve the last vestige of mankind's hope to fight the deadly plague.

Now, from the deck of an aircraft carrier, to the farmlands of the Eastern Shore and the very heart of the nation's capital, this former action movie star carries the hope of an entire race. With him rests the only chance at fighting the spread of the virus, and turning back the tide of infection.

But the undead are changing. They are evolving. Hunting in larger groups and banding together to track their prey, they are more dangerous predators than ever before. To survive, he will have to learn to adapt, and to come to grips with the most important evolution of all: his own.
Review

"LZR-1143: Evolution easily ranks amongst the best zombie books of 2011. It is a brilliantly complete zombie yarn filled with never ending action that thrives on a versatile story line guaranteed to leave you satisfied."

--Bricksofthedead.com
From the Author
Zombies are fun, aren't they? Not just from the 'mindless walking death machine' angle, but from all the associated aspects that go with telling a zombie story. In point of fact, these creatures aren't terribly interesting, right? It's the action around them, supplied by the human protagonists and the backdrop of crumbling civilization that makes it a fun ride. But the creatures themselves--drooling, shambling, mindless carnivores--they're entertaining. They wander about in herds, they walk off roofs, and they shamble in front of moving vehicles. And they do it all out of an innate and primal hunger for flesh.

What is it about watching or reading about these things that captivates us? Obviously, we enjoy rooting for the good guys in their fight against something that can be loosely described as evil. We enjoy watching the automatic weapon fire play out in our mind; the thrill of bad guys disintegrating in a hail of righteous gunfire and the good guys walking away triumphant.

But it's not truly that simple, is it? Zombies aren't actually evil. How can they be? One requires sentience to formulate evil intent. After all, that's what makes something a zombie as opposed to someone a violent, cannibalistic sociopath. No, zombies aren't evil, just mindless and oblivious--bent on one thing, achieving one goal.

Like the guy who cut you off this morning on the freeway, blithely texting away on his mobile phone.

Like the lady that barely beat you to the front of the line at the grocery store, oblivious to the fact that you stood there in your pajamas, carrying two quarts of milk, while she carried several hundred pounds of items.

They're not so different, the zombies and the aforementioned normal folk. Oh sure, the guy from the freeway isn't trying to rip your throat out, but it's a matter of degree, right? To some extent, zombie stories are just that. A matter of degree. In the end, I would theorize that zombie stories are more real than we give them credit for. They're just every day life writ large and in more defined black and white.

While we may not be pursued by mindless automatons hungering for our flesh on a daily basis, neither is our reaction as extreme when we encounter mindless foes. The guy who cut you off? The lady at the supermarket? Both totally oblivious and mindless; neither truly culpable in intent. Which is why our reactions are equally mundane. In both circumstances, your reaction is likely to be what? Inventive curses under your breath?

At most you actually honk the horn, verbally confront the transgressor. But you don't shoot them. You don't commandeer a shotgun or a pitchfork or a cleverly configured laser saw or any of the other numerous tools that get used in a classic zombie tale. It's because they're not chasing you hungering for your flesh.

Now if we take that mindless, selfish oblivion up a few hundred notches, remove hand-eye coordination and add a very specific preference for rare meat? That's a story!

So why am I talking about this? I suppose it's mostly to give you insight into why I enjoyed writing this book, and why I am continuing to enjoy writing the series. Not that I need to tell you, obviously, since you're reading this, but this is a great genre, and one that I'm not only lucky, but privileged, to be a part of. Hopefully, you're enjoying my contribution to the art. If not, I'm sure your review will flesh that out in time.

Sorry, pun intended.
