Uno de los secretos fines de su trabajo era la aniquilacion de otro caballero (también de barba tenebrosa de moro, también curtido) que estaba compilando en Inglaterra un vasto diccionario y que murió mucho antes de ser aniquilado por Burton. Ése era Eduardo Lane, el orientalista, autor de una versión harto escrupulosa de las 1001 Noches, que había suplantado a otra de GallandJorge Luis Borges
