Cagigas, el protagonista y narrador, nacido en 1934, es miembro de una familia acomodada, de origen espanol. Su ingreso en la Universidad de La Habana ha coincidido con el golpe de Estado por el que Batista ha accedido al poder. Su educacion sentimental, su aventura revolucionaria, su itinerario ideologico, constituyen el eje de La tierra mas hermosa. En ella, la politica y las ideas son el trasfondo de unas vidas y de unos anos convulsos. El periodo de tiempo en que la generacion del protagonista creyo que iba a cambiar el mundo, y tambien forjo sus sentimientos.
