Deze masterproef zou nooit geworden zijn wat hij nu is, zonder de hulp van verschillende mensen.

Samenvatting
Over het algemeen is beton goed bestand tegen brand. Het kan dan ook economisch interessant zijn
om betonconstructies na brand te herstellen in plaats van ze af te breken en opnieuw te bouwen. De
grote vraag hierbij is echter: “Wat is de residuele sterkte van het beton na brand?”. Er is reeds heel
wat onderzoek uitgevoerd naar de residuele eigenschappen van beton. Hierbij werd voornamelijk
gefocust op de sterkte en stijfheid. Bovendien werd in de meeste experimentele studies gebruik
gemaakt van natuurlijke koeling. Nochtans is reeds aangetoond dat waterkoeling een nefast effect
heeft op de residuele eigenschappen van beton.
In deze thesis werd de invloed van versnelde koeling op een aantal eigenschappen van het beton
nagegaan. Twee koelingsmethoden, onderdompeling en 5 minuten besproeien, werden toegepast na
opwarming tot 175°C, 350°C en 600°C. In eerste instantie werd het temperatuursverloop, in het
inwendige van kubussen, gedurende koeling onderzocht. Van deze kubussen werd vervolgens de
residuele druksterkte bepaald. Ten tweede werd de invloed van beide koelingsmethoden op het
residueel spanning-rekdiagram van cilinders onderzocht. Ten derde werd de residuele hechtsterkte
bepaald aan de hand van pull-out proeven. Als laatste werden driepuntsbuigproeven uitgevoerd op
transiënt opgewarmde prisma’s.
Waterkoeling leidt tot een thermische schok in het beton, dewelke gekarakteriseerd werd door een
sterke temperatuurdaling op korte tijd. De thermische schok is meer uitgesproken bij
onderdompeling dan bij 5 minuten besproeien.
Waterkoeling had een sterke invloed op het residueel spanning-rekdiagram. Er werd een significante
extra sterktereductie vastgesteld ten opzichte van natuurlijk gekoelde proefstukken. Toenemende
temperatuur leidt tot een afname van de elasticiteitsmodulus en een toename van de rek bij

piekspanning. Het gemodificeerd Sargin-model blijkt goed in staat het spanning-rekdiagram te
beschrijven bij lage temperaturen. Bij hoge temperaturen werden kleine afwijkingen vastgesteld.
Opwarming en vervolgens waterkoeling bleek een significante invloed te hebben op de residuele
hechtsterkte: de maximale hechtspanning neemt sterk af bij toenemende temperatuur. Er werd
weinig verschil gevonden tussen beide koelmethoden. Het model voorgesteld in MC 90 bleek ook
geldig te blijven voor beton dat opgewarmd en gekoeld werd met water.
De 500°C isotherm methode en de zone-methode waren relatief goed in staat om het vloei- en
bezwijkmoment van gewapende prisma’s te bepalen.
