Preface
Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning (IDEAL) was initially a
biennial forum dedicated to emerging and challenging topics in intelligent data
analysis, knowledge discovery, and statistical and computational learning. The
hugesuccessofrecentIDEALconferencesandthecontinuousgrowthofthefield
have compelled it to become an annual conference after 2003. It is now a major
international, interdisciplinary event covering subjects from data mining, infor-
mationretrievalandmanagement,autonomouslearning,andagentstofinancial
engineering, neural networks, emerging learning paradigms and systems, bioin-
formatics, and pattern recognition. Data analysis and processing has become a
commonthemeandplaysacrucialroleinmanydisciplines,especiallyinfinance,
biology,engineering,andinformationtechnology.Demandforintelligentmetho-
dologies and tools is immense. The multidisciplinary nature of current research
is pushing the traditional boundaries and bringing new ideas and solutions, and
it is the way forward.
This volume contains 164 refereed and finally accepted papers presented at
the4thInternationalConferenceonIntelligentDataEngineeringandAutomated
Learning (IDEAL 2003), held in Hong Kong, March 21–23, 2003. IDEAL 2003
receivedarecordlevelofsubmissions,321intotal,fromallovertheworld.They
were subsequently peer-reviewed by the Program Committee. The conference
washeldtogetherwiththe2003IEEEInternationalConferenceonComputatio-
nal Intelligence for Financial Engineering at the modern and magnificent Hong
KongConventionandExhibitionCentre.Bothconferencessharedtheirtechnical
sessions and stimulating discussions, and attendees enjoyed the tutorials given
by leading experts, Amir Atiya, John Moody and Halbert White, and the key-
note talks by distinguished guest speakers, Yaser Abu-Mostafa, Tim Bollerslev,
Michael Dempster, and Stephen Figlewski.
We would like to thank the International Advisory Committee and the Stee-
ring Committee for their guidance and advice. We would also like to thank the
Program Committee members for their rigorous and efficient reviewing of the
contributed papers, and the Organizing Committee for their enormous efforts
