inHanover,NewHampshireandthirteenyearsasheadmasteratthenationalboardinghighschoolofPhillipsAcademyatAndover,Massa-
chusetts.
IchosetocometoGuilfordbecauseIbelievetheGuilfordcommunityoffersauniquecollieeducationinwhichprofessorsand
studentsworktogethertodeveloppersonalvaluesandtoacquireandpracticeintellectualskills.AGuilfordeducationpreparesstudentsto
succeedintheirchosenfieldsandtomakeadifferenceinoursocietyIwantedtobepartofthiscommunityandtohelpdeveloptheGuilford

GuilfordCollegeisaneducationalcommunitywhichstrivestointegratepersonal,intellectual,physical,andspiritualgrowththrough
participationinseveralrichtraditions.Thesetraditionsincludeliberalartseducationwhichvaluesacademicexcellenceandstressesthe
needinafreesocietyformature,broadlyeducatedmenandwomen;careerdevelopmentandcommunityservicewhichprovidestudents,
whatevertheir^eorplaceinlife,widiknowledgeandskillsapplicabletotheirchosenvocations;andQuakerismwhichplacesspecial
emphasisonhelpingindividualstoexamineandstrengthentheirvalues.Webelievethatthewiseandhumaneuseofknowledgerequires
commitmenttosocietyaswellastoself.
