Abstract
The study of aerodynamics plays a vital role for the preliminary design of a bridge,
alongside the structural analysis.
Great attention must be paid for the shape of the bridge deck section to avoid
aeroelasticinstability(galloping,flutter), toidentifyvortexinducedvibrations(VIV)
critical wind speeds, to precisely know aerodynamics static loads.
This master thesis is part of a project conducted by the Politecnico di Milano
Wind Tunnel focused on the aerodynamic characterization of a cable stayed bridge
currently under construction over the river Rio Ozama in Santo Domingo.
The main issue of this study is represented by the presence of another road
bridge with truss structure (Puente Francisco del Rosario Sanchez) which is only 10
m distant from the new one: for this reason specific analysis had to be carried out to
verify aerodynamic interactions between the two bridges in tandem configuration,
upwind and downwind.
At a later stage a CFD analysis was conducted (with the non-commercial code
OpenFOAM) to investigate the results obtained through wind tunnel tests: the
research was targeted to the evaluation of the steady force coefficients of two main
sections (the initial one "P0" and the optimized one "P3A"), to verify the Strouhal
numbers obtained by the vortex shedding analysis and the main flow velocity profile
around the "P3A" section.
The aerodynamic interaction between the two bridges produces large variations
of the forces acting on the new bridge deck section. During CFD simulations, to
reproduce the aerodynamic effects of the truss structure of the existing bridge, two
simplified models were tested: an Equivalent Porosity model and an Actuator Line
model.
Both 2D and 3D grids were used alongside RANS and URANS models to achieve
good results with a limited computational cost.

Sommario
Lo studio dell’aerodinamica è un passo fondamentale per il progetto preliminare di
un ponte, tanto quanto il calcolo strutturale.
Per evitare instabilità di tipo aeroelastico (galloping,flutter), individuare le ve-
locità critiche che possono innescare vibrazioni indotte dai vortici di scia (VIV),
i relativi smorzamenti necessari per limitarle e conoscere con precisione i carichi
aerodinamici statici, è necessario un attento design della sezione del ponte; la pro-
blematicadellevibrazioniindottedalvento(VIVeflutter)èacuitaperpontistrallati
e sospesi, data la loro lunghezza e inevitabile flessibilità.
Questa tesi è parte di un progetto che la Galleria del Vento di Milano ha con-
dotto sullo studio aerodinamico di un ponte ferroviario strallato, attualmente in
costruzione sul fiume Rio Ozama a Santo Domingo.
Laproblematicaatipicadiquestotipodistudioèlapresenzadiunpontestradale
a travatura reticolare (Puente Francisco del Rosario Sanchez) distante circa 10 m
dal ponte in esame; per questa ragione è stato necessario condurre specifici test per
verificare l’interazione aerodinamica dei due ponti in configurazione sopravento e
sottovento.
La tesi si focalizza su un’ analisi CFD (con il codice non commerciale Open-
FOAM), condotta al fine di investigare i dati sperimentali : lo studio è stato rivolto
alla determinazione delle polari statiche di due delle sezioni provate nella Galleria
del Vento (la prima denominata P0 e la sezione finale P3A) nelle tre configurazioni
(singolo, sopravento e sottovento) e all’analisi del distacco dei vortici di scia con il
confronto dei numeri di Strouhal ricavati con i due metodi.
L’ interazione tra i due ponti genera forti variazioni di forze aerodinamiche sul
nuovo ponte: nell’ analisi numerica per la modellizzazione della travatura reticolare
del ponte preesistente si è scelto di riprodurne gli effetti aerodinamici tramite due
modelli semplificati: tramite un modello a Porosità Equivalente e uno ad Actuator
Line.
Per limitare il numero di celle, necessarie per produrre risultati attendibili, e
limitare di conseguenza il costo computazionale si è optato per modelli RANS e
URANS sia su griglie bidimensionali che tridimensionali.
