How to Use This Book
This workbook contains 40 groups of vocabulary words selected from
Breaking Dawn. Many of these words will show up on your SAT, ACT,
GED, or SSAT. Beginning at Group 1, refer to the Breaking Dawn page
where each vocabulary word appears. Read the word in context and
come up with a defi nition. Then check your defi nitions against those
provided in this workbook and make corrections. I’ll also show you
synonyms, word parts, and memorization tools. Read these over a few
times, and then complete the drills. Do that for all 40 groups. There’s
no easier or more fun way to learn 600 vocabulary words! By the end
of this book, your vocabulary will be larger, your test scores will be
higher, and you’ll be a Breaking Dawn scholar!

t 1. Inevitable (p. 1) means unavoidable. I love the preface (introductory
i

i chapter) in each of the Twilight books in which you get a brief
f
e
D glimpse of what’s to come in the book. Interestingly, three of the
four books in the Twilight saga use the word inevitable or the related
words inexorable (unstoppable), relentless (persistent), or impending
(looming) in the preface or fi rst chapter! Synonym: ineludible.
2. Reverence (p. 6) means deep respect. Any car lover would treat Bella’s
Mercedes Guardian with respect. Too bad Jake’s not around; he’d
surely enjoy it. Reverence is easy to remember; it sounds likes Reverend
(a minister), a person for whom most people show deep respect.
3. Staid (p. 6) means dull and unadventurous. I remember this word
because it sounds like stay, as in stay at home—be unadventurous.
Synonyms: decorous (proper), sedate, sober, somber.
4. Resigned (p. 10) means accepting defeat or some other undesirable
result, almost like resigning from a job that’s too diffi cult. To
Charlie, Billy seems to have given up, to have resigned himself to
the fact that Jake has run away. Charlie has good intentions, but
Billy knows that Jake needs time to heal.
5. Omniscient (p. 11) means knowing everything. Omni- means all, as
in omnipresent (present all over) and omnipotent (all-powerful), and
-scient refers to knowing, as in science (the gathering of knowledge).
So omniscient means all-knowing—knowing everything.
6. Tenuous (p. 12) means weak or fl imsy.
7. Ominous (p. 13) means threatening. Synonyms: foreboding,
inauspicious, menacing. SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT reading
comprehension passages always include a few questions about the
tone of a passage. Tone is expressed through an author’s choice
of words and punctuation. You can see the ominous (threatening)
tone of this page from words like “fi dgeting,” “murder,” “rattled,”
“horror,” “victim,” and “fl inched.” Bella is expecting an ugly scene
when she and Edward tell Charlie about the good news; she even
wants Edward to wait until after Charlie has put away his gun!
8. Revelation (p. 14) means surprising or dramatic announcement or
realization.
