Preface
ThisbookpresentsaselectionofpapersdeliveredataconferenceontheRecep-
tion of Cupid and Psyche from 1600 at Leeds in July 2016, organised by Regine
MayandStephenHarrison,whichhadtwenty-ninespeakersofnational andin-
ternational acclaim.¹ It is part of an ongoing research collaboration by the edi-
tors to explore the reception of Apuleius’ story from 1600 to today.
This project’s focus on images as well as books has allowed us to display
someoftheresultingresearchinvariousphysicalandonlineexhibitions.Anon-
line exhibition ‘Facets of Apuleius’ Golden Ass in the Brotherton Collection at
Leeds’ at https://library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections/view/1594 showcases
several of the items discussed in this volume as well as others not included
here.OurthanksgotoLeonardoCostantinifortakingtheimages,andthecollea-
gues at the University of Leeds Brotherton Special Collections for all their sup-
port in making this possible.Two exhibitions associated with the project went
ahead for February 2019: ‘Treasures at the Brotherton: Cupid and Psyche. The
story of Love and the Soul in Leeds’ in the Brotherton Library, Leeds, and
’Love and the Soul: Apuleius’ tale of Cupid and Psyche in European Culture
since 1600’ as a Proscholium Display at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Again
the editors would like to thank library colleagues in both Leeds and Oxford
forhelpingtobringCupidandPsychetoawideaudienceinsideandoutsideaca-
demia, especially Sallyanne Gilchrist and Dot Little from the Bodleian exhibi-
tions team at Oxford.
