Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) is the;Qldest cotltinuously celebrated Jewish festival! The
Haggadah is a book that <;!:)ntains the entire service used for the Passover seder. * The central
message for jews in the I;f~adah is that God rescued the Israelites,from slavery in Egypt. In
the Haggadah tile name of·'Moses is mentioned only once, in order to prevent Moses from
becoming idolized. * Three pieces of matzah are placed in
the middle of the table. They represent the three classes of
Jewish people in ancient times: th~ Kohens - the priestly
class responsible for the administration of the Temple
sacrifices, the Levites - the priestly class responsible for
the actual performances 'of the Temple sacrifices, and the
Israelites - all other jews. * One of t~e most important
concepts of the seder is that each person gain a personal
understanding of the original exodus experience. * The
exodus from Egypt is such an important event in jewish
history that it is'mention~d in specific prayers each day!

There are so many things going on at Beth Israel. Each year the
community welcomes a brilliant, informative, and erudite teacher
during the Gusti Engelberg Visiting Scholar Program. We are
about to welcome Craig Taubman and celebrate Shabbat, while
bringing joyous music and inspiring spirit to our sanctuary, brought by the Mallin/
Malamut Children's Performing Arts Fund. Our students can supplement their
education through myriad computer games and programs that make learning fun, in
the Richard Gadon Media Center located in the Maurice Cohen Library. Our
Confirmands spend a wonderful weekend with me in NY as we bond and discover
the depth of our Jewish life, through the generosity of the Dorothy and Cy Shrier
Fund. Our young people are helped to explore their heritage during a summer in
Israel program, by scholarships from the Herman Pogachefsky Fund. Our teachers
attend conferences to become better able to help our children grow, through grants
from the Brickman/Gross Family Continuing Education Fund. Our library (Maurice
Cohen Fund), our Religious School (SinderbrandIRosenberg Fund), our Nursery
School (Charles Cohen Fund), our building, are all subsidized through the
generosity and commitment of families who wish to provide a legacy of life. There
are many funds, and they provide so much that helps to make our synagogue so
profound and beautiful. What a wonderful way to memorialize loved ones. What a
compelling way to continue the good works they did during their lives.
In recent years, more and more Beth Israelites have recognized the value of sending
their children to Camp Harlam, the Reform camp in the Poconos. There, they become

There is a custom in many
synagogues to celebrate the time
between Purim and Passover as a
Jewish music month. It is during
this period when most of the
special music programs, concerts and festivals are
held. Our Temple has not officially adopted this
practice (in my opinion there should be twelve Jewish
music months rather than one per year). However, the variety
of musical events we will be having in the next couple of
weeks could be easily called a music festival and, hopefully,
will satisfy the most demanding and most diverse tastes of all
Jewish music lovers. To list them in chronological order: On
April 2, an organized trip to the Metropolitan Opera in New
York City to see "Nabucco," a famous opera by Verdi on the
Biblical subject of Jewish people in Babylonian exile. We'll
have a pre-performance talk on the bus.
While still humming the soaring melodies of magnificent
choirs and gorgeous arias from Nabucco, we'll let ourselves
be swept away by a totally different wave of contagious
rhythms during Craig Taubman's Friday Night Live on April
4th. Let's go crazy, clap our hands, stomp our feet, dance in
the aisles and sing our hearts out!
And last, but not least, come to the synagogue on Friday,

April 12 , to celebrate Shabb~t Ha-Gadol, the Great Sabbath,
the last Shabbat before Passover. Both our children's and
adult choirs (that, by the way, will also participate in Friday
Night Live) wiIl help you to tune into the yontevdik mode with
very special and wonderful songs. So please come to immerse
yourself into the festival atmosphere while you are still able to
eat chametz.
I hope everyone will find something appealing in our
April music programs, and I will be happy to see you at all
