A four-year course ofstudy was first introduced in o
1866,and in 1921 Bridgewaterwas authorized to

award the bachelor ofeducation degree. In 1933,the
name was changed to Bridgewater StateTeachers
College,which it remained until 1960 when a full-
fledged,multipurpose liberal arts curriculum was begun
and the bachelor ofarts degree was conferred.The
college's graduate school opened in 1937.
Dr.AdrianTinsley,the tenth president ofthe college
and first woman president,was appointed in 1989 and
under her leadership the college has continued to
flourish.Today,full-time faculty number approximately
270 men andwomen,the full-time and part-time
student body exceeds 9,000 students,and more than
100 undergraduate,graduate and certificate programs
are offered. From a quarter-acre ofland and a single
building in 1846,the college has 240 acres and 30
academic,administrative and residential buildings,all of
them wired for high-speed voice,video and data
transmission.
In September,1995,the college opened theJohnJoseph
Moakley Center forTechnologicalApplications,
establishing Bridgewater as among the leading pioneer
institutions in New England in educational technology.
The building,funded by a $10 million dollar federal
grant,is named in honor ofU.S. CongressmanJohn
