The Alabama College System, consisting ofpublic two-year community,junior,
and technical colleges and an upper division college, seeks to provide accessible
quality educational opportunities, promote economic growth, and enhance the
quality oflife for the people ofAlabama.

GENERAL INFORMATION
MISSION
Athens State College is a baccalaureate degree granting institution which offers onlyjunior and senior level course work and
operates under the authority of the State Board of Education. Located in north central Alabama, Athens State College
acknowledges a commitment to serve transfers ofjunior, community, and technical colleges as well as students from other
institutions ofhighereducation. The College prepares students for professional careers and forgraduate school. Athens State
offers nontraditional students many programs to fulfill their educational and career goals. Continuing education and
community servicesprovide avarietyofenrichment opportunitiestothepeople ofthe region. Athens State College combines
individual attention, quality teaching, and a strong liberal arts component to develop an informed individual who is prepared
to function effectively in achanging society.

GOVERNANCE
Athens State College is abaccalaureate degree granting institution operating underthe control ofthe Alabama State Board o
Education. The president is the chief executive officer of the College and is directly responsible to the State Board o
Education through the Chancellor.
HISTORY
Athens State College is both the oldest and the youngest institution of higher education in Alabama's state educationa
system. The College was founded in 1822 by local citizens who purchased five acres ofland, erected a building, and began
Athens Female Academy. Ownership ofthe school was transferred in 1842 to the Tennessee Conference ofthe Methodisl
Church. With the birth of the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church in 1870, the College came under the
jurisdiction ofthatbody.
On May 10, 1974, the Board ofTrustees requested from theNorth AlabamaConference ofthe United Methodist Church that
the College seek affiliation with the State ofAlabama. The conference, at its annual meeting in June, 1974, gave the Board of
Trusteesthis permission and authorized the transferofthe college to the State ofAlabama.
In June 1975, the College was accepted by the Alabama State Board ofEducation subject to the appropriation ofoperating
funds by the Alabama Legislature. Later that year, the Legislature appropriated funds for the operation ofthe College to
servethe graduates ofstatejunior, community, and technical colleges/institutes.
The institution's name has changed several times in its 174 year history, following adjustments in purpose and governance.
Athens Female Academy, upon transfer to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church in 1842, became Athens
Female Institute. Then in 1889 after having been transferredto the newly formed North Alabama conference, the college was
known as Athens Female College. In 1931, the College became co-educational and was known as Athens College. In 1975,
when the institution became part ofthe state educational system, it was renamed Athens State College, marking the initiation
ofan era ofincreased opportunity for service. The long history ofservice by the College is the foundation upon which the
future ofthe College rests.

Athens State College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges ofthe Southern Association ofColleges and Schools to

BUILDINGS
Brown Hall
Brown Hall serves as the administrative building. It contains the offices for the President, the Dean for Academic Affairs,
andthe DirectorofDevelopment.
Chasteen Hall
Chasteen Hall is located one block west ofthe main campus at the intersection ofClinton and Hobbs Street and serves as a
classroom building.
Carter Physical Education Center
The gymnasium, Olympic-size swimming pool, weight room, faculty offices, campus recreation office and classrooms are
housed in the Carter Physical Education Center.
