Preface
After the Glorious Qur’an, the character and sayings of the
Prophet Muhammad form a major source for any study of Islam.
The Qur’an itself introduces the Prophet Muhammad as a perfect
role model, in whom there is a good example for all the believers
(33:21). The Prophet Muhammad was responsible for explaining
the Qur’an (16:44), for the purification of people and for teaching
them the Qur’an and wisdom (62:2). He never spoke of his own
wish (53:3). Muslims are asked to hold on to whatever he gave
them and refrain from whatever he prohibited (59:7).
Thus, every aspect of his character and conduct, including the
noble traits of his character, words and deeds are to be followed.
The papers in this volume discuss various aspects of the life,
character and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
The first paper is entitled “A Glimpse of the Character Traits of
the Prophet Muhammad.” In this paper, Ayatollah Sayyid Abu’l-
Fadl Mujtahid Zanjani reviews the life and conduct of the Prophet
Muhammad in a scholarly manner. The paper first appeared in
Persian under the title ‘Gush-i’i az Akhlaq-i Muhammad’（‘A
Glimpse of the Character Traits of the Prophet Muhammad’）in
the book ‘Muhammad Khatam-i Payambaran' {Muhammad, the
Seal of the Prophets), Husayniyyah-i Irshad, Tehran, 1347/1968,
published to commemorate the 1400th anniversary according to
the lunar calendar of the prophecy of Muhammad (blessings be
upon him and his household). The paper is translated from Farsi
into English by Dr Karim Aghili.
The second paper is entitled “The Prophet Muhammad as
portrayed in Nahj al-Balaghah”. In this paper Mohammad Javad
Shomali has attempted to illustrate an image of the Prophet
Muhammad based on the words of Imam Ali b. Abi Talib. Since
Imam Ali was brought up by the Prophet Muhammad himself and
stayed with him all his life, his account of the character of the
Prophet is of utmost importance. This is in addition to the Imam’s
own insight, piety and knowledge that make his position among
all Muslims very special and his view about the Prophet
particularly significant.
The third paper is entitled “the Prophet Muhammad from the
Shi‘a Perspective”. In this paper Dr Muhammad Legenhausen
gives an account of the Prophet Muhammad based on the Quran,
hadiths, Shi‘a kalam, Islamic philosophy and ‘irfan (mysticism).
He ends his paper by elaborating on the idea of absolute
prophethood.
The fourth paper is entitled “Subjects of Love According to the
Prophet Muhammad”. Dr Abbas Ali Shameli studies a well-
known hadith of the Prophet Muhammad about three things from
this world that are made lovable to him. Referring to different
versions of the hadith narrated in Shi’i and Sunni sources, Dr
Shameli adopts a theological approach to the hadith and explains
the reason behind each object. He ends the paper with a brief
review of Ibn Arabi’s mystical interpretation of this hadith.
