1774-1995
TheMeetingHouse,wasjustwhatthenameimplies-aplaceforeveryone
intowntomeet,whetherforreligiousorsocialgatherings.
1774-ThefirstMeetingHousewasbuiltonthePinnacle.(Asmallmountain
inthegeographicalcenterofCroydon.)Cooper'shistory.
1794-AsecondMeetingHousewasbuiltondiesamelocadonbutneverquite
completed.Itwastorndownin 1828... and..
1828 -Thelumberwas used to construct the tovm-house atEastVillage
(presenttownhall.)Intheearlyrecords,paintingandrepairstothehallwere
usually"passedover"orrefusedattownmeetingsbecausethehallwasnotbuilt
ontownproperty.
1926 -Thehallwas onprivateproperty(98years) untilHenryR. Stone,
AdministratorfortheestateofAlmaH.Stone,gavethelandtothetovmin
1926.
1929-ThetownraisedS500forpaintingandrepairs.Committeeforsamewas
GeorgeT. Blanchard, Charles S. Walker and Cyrus W. Thompson. The
repairsweremadein 1931 and 1932(seeTownReports.)
1936 - FirstAddition to the Hall - S800 was raisedforimprovements, to
connectanadditiontotherearofthehall,notlessthan 16by40feet.

1939-Electricityinstalledreplacingkerosenelamps.
1940 - Second andThirdAdditions- Selectmen's office on the right and
Libraryontheleft.Theyraisedmoneyonserialnotesofthetown;S500the
firstyear,S500thenext,andtheremainderthethirdyear.
1950- Hard-woodfloor. Raised$100 andtheremainingtobepaidfrom
surplus.
1956-Newroof,raised$600-Paintinside,raised$425.
1961-GiftoflandinbackofthetownhallbyDr.IvorMuzzey.
1964-Waterinthehall,raised$500.
1965-Oilheatfurnaceinstalledtoreplacewood...usedfundsfromdiesale
ofdieHarkemaLot;$1,255.
1972-FourthAddition-Raised$3,715fortoiletstobeinstalledwherethe
Selectmen hold office. AnewSelectmen's oflice and astorageroomtobe
addedtotherearofthehall.TheTownReportof1973reads,"diemoneyis
inthebank".Thesepticsystemandbuildingstartedin 1974.
1985-TownReport,Page37."Aftersixmondisofmeetingsandtwopublic
hearings,dieCommitteerecommendsdiatanewbuildingbeconstructedto
houseallmunicipaloffices."
1987 - The Town Qerk's office is moved from a private home into the
Selectmen'sofficeinMarchof1987.(Allusingdiesameofficeandequipment.)
1990-TheSelectmen/sTownQerk/TaxCollectorusingonesmalloffice
wasnotpractical.Atacostofapproximately$4,369,thestorageroomwas
remodeled and this enlarged the Selectmen/Tovm Clerk/Tax Collector's
officewhichisstillinadequate.TownReport,P.31.
1991-ThereIsNoLongerAnyStorageArea-Croydonisgrowing: Census
of1990was627.Censusof1970was312.
1992-Theoverheadbeams aredisintegratingandthehalldoesnotmeet

nationalrequirementsforapublicbuilding.
1992-Mar 10,AnnualMeeting. RepairstructuralintegrityofTownHall;
votedtoraiseandappropriatethesumofS20,000.
1993-Article5...toraiseandappropriateS99,500torenovateHall...(see1992
report)...moneywouldberaisedbybonding. Ballotvote,notpassed. Com-
mitteeformedtoresearchandbringplantoSelectmenonwaystoupgrade
municipalfacilities.
1994-Mar8,AnnualMeeting: Articles12tiirough17,alternativeplansand
coststorenovate,demolishorconstruct anewTownHall. Alldefeated.
SpecialTownMeetingon Sept. 13, 1994autiiorizedtheSelectmen to sell
TownownedpropertiestakenbyTaxCollector'sDeed.
1995-Mar 14,AnnualMeeting. Article 10. ...autiiorizetiieSelectmento
spenduptoS100,000ofmoniesreceived fromsaleofTownproperties(from
CroninandQuinnproperty)torenovateTownHallandmakeithandicap
accessible. Passed. May/June-Selectmensoughtbidsforrenovationwork,
awardedcontracttoHamesShopJoineryofAndover,NH. Amountspent
$100,818.70. Buildingnowyearrounduse,withhandicapentrance,bath-
roomandkitchenup-grade,addedstorage.
