T he Gennadius Library of the American School of classical Studies at Athens houses a rich
and diverse collection of books, rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art
which illuminate hellenic culture and civilization from antiquity to modern times. Internationally
renowned as a research center, the Library also plays an active role in the cultural life of Greece.
Inspired by the vision of its founder Joannes Gennadius, the Library is testament to the vibrancy
and power of Greek culture in its manifold expressions through the centuries.
This year Athens has been named World Book capital by UneSco. The objective is to inspire
the desire for knowledge and to foster the enjoyment of reading. As a historic library, the
Gennadeion undertakes to present those aspects of books that remind us not only of the joy
of reading but also of the creative miracle of reading that leads to knowledge.
In celebration of this occasion the Gennadius Library is pleased to present an art exhibition
by the renowned Greek sculptor Alexandra Athanassiades in the exhibition space of the new
“Makriyannis Wing.” entitled “Beyond cavafy’s Written Word” this exhibit, and others to follow,
will surely transform the Library and the American School in giving us a venue to attract a wider
public. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gennadius overseer Irene Moscahlaidis
who encouraged us to have this exhibition, the Bodossaki Foundation for funding the catalog,
and the anonymous benefactor who so generously supported the exhibition.
Inspired by one of the most appealing Greek poets, c.p. cavafy, the art exhibition of
Alexandra Athanassiades is an artistic experiment exploring the limits of inner self exposure.
Featured prominently in this exhibit are books, eloquently alluding to alternate states of self
in both open and closed attitudes. her starting points are not only the poems of cavafy but also
the literal traces of his writing. The autograph of the poet becomes tangible, the book becomes
a sculpture, while cavafy’s poems are the trigger for a visual journey that reveals thoughts and
messages through the art of the sculptor.
The handwritten poems of cavafy from the “Singhopoulo's notebook” – an artwork in itself
that was published in 1968 by G.p. Savidis – offered Alexandra Athanassiades the key to create
her own symbolic reading of cavafy’s poetry. The images began as illustrations of the poems,
but over the next four years the project took on a life of its own and moved piecemeal in many
other directions (graffiti, collages, sculptures and fragments of objects) for a more complex
pictorial reading.
In the collection “Beyond cavafy’s Written Word” the book is both a physical artifact and
a unifying symbol upon which the artist explored thoughts and emotions emanating from the
poetry. What better way to “read” cavafy? A call to all to let our imagination and our personal
experience guide us towards knowledge. happy reading.
