'Up in Walton Hills" albumsdepictthe lives ofthe people who lived in this community
from 1936 until the present year.
How the "Up in Walton Hills" albumswere saved and acquired by the
Walton Hills Historical Resource Center:
Weeklycolumnstitled "Up in Walton Hills with CountryJane" appeared in the Bedford 77mes-
Register from 1949 until 1963. Thesearticles were written byBedford Township residents living in the
'Walton Hills' section of thetownship: FlorenceWagner, Ruth Marquardt, Helen Laing and Georgia
Pace, all ofwhomwrote underthe byline 'Country Jane.'
FlorenceWagnerwrotetheweeklycolumns from 1949 until 1955. Armin and Florence Wagner
lived at7450 McLellan Drive. From 1955 until 1958 Ruth MarquardtofAlexanderRoad wrotethe columns.
In 1959 Helen Laing wrote the articles. Jackand Helen Laing lived at 160 Walton Road.
Lastly, Georgia Pacewrotethecolumns from 1960 to 1963. Georgia and Ben Pace's home is at 17836
South Meadowpark Drive.
Ludwig ShanerConelly, owner ofThe Conelly RealtyCo., collected the "Up in Walton Hills with
CountryJane" articles, plusotherarticles, fliersand photos of this partofBedford Township. General
Conelly gave his collection to BettyWaltonofWalton Road. Betty Walton continued tocollectarticles
and then in 1980turned everything over toJoe MazzoneofCarmany Drive. In 1985 Virginia Mazzone
gave thescrapbook material to Jean and Bob KainsingerofOrchard Hill Drive.
In 1999the Kainsingers assembled lhecollection of data into albums labeled "Upin Walton Hills."
The albums include additional newspaperarticles and photoscollected bymanyotherlocal residents.
The albums arechuck-full ofan assortmentofmaterialoflocal interest.

- Origins of Our Village Historical Center -
In the mid 1930s BrigadierGeneral L. S. Conelly, a Realtor who had officesin Bedford, Maple Heights and
Garfield Heights at thattime, realizeda businessopportunity in our areaofBedfordTownship. Along Walton and
EgbertRoads hundredsofacres of old farmfields satidle. Conelly's idea wastosubdivide theproperties into large
lots and help the land owners sell offtheiracreage nottofarmers, but tocityfolks whowanted tobuild houses in a
countryatmosphere. Conellystarted afilecalled "Walton Hills:
During the next30yearsConelly amassed acomprehensivecollection ofreading material abouttheWalton
Hills"sectionofBedford Township. Hesaved news articles andfeaturestoriesthatappeared in The Cleve/and
Press, The C/eve/and News, TheP/ainDea/erand Bedford Times-Register, his Conelly Reallyfliers, letters and
papers and Don Flora's 1956 aerial photos of sections ofWalton Hills.
Conelly'sfile included theweekly "Up in Walton Hillswith CountryJane"columnsthatappeared in the
Bedford 77mes-Registerfrom 1949-1963. Theseuniqueand lengthyarticles documented the livesofvillagersduring
thoseyears. Theywerewritten byasuccessionoffourlocal residents, all underthe byline CountryJane:" Florence
Wagnerfrom 1949-1955, Ruth Marquardtfrom 1955-1958, Helen Laing in 1959and Georgia Pacefrom 1960-1963.
Shortlybefore he died in 1963, Conelly handed overhiscollection to hisfriend BettyWalton, the wife of our
firstPoliceChiefSterling Walton. Betty not only putthepapers in a scrapbook, shedonated Jefferson Walton's Civil
WarDischarge PaperandotherWalton familyrelics and continued tocollectpertinentmaterial. In 1980sheturned
everything over toJoe Mazzone, and he too continued toadd itemsoflocal interest In 1985 Virginia Mazzone, Joe's
widow, gavethescrapbooks to Jean and Bob Kainsingerforsafe-keeping, andthecollection keptgrowing. The few
villagers who knewaboutthis uniquecollection ofhistoric local items feltthe papersshould bestored in a public
place, readilyaccessible toeveryone.
OurcurrentVillage Hall Community Room, completed in 1972, hasnarrowhand-crafted showcases and
deep hand-crafted cabinets. Forthefirst 16yearstheshowcase were not used and the cabinets held an add
assortmentoftrophies. In 1988 aCouncil committee asked Jean Kainsingertodecorate and fill-up the showcases
and cabinetswith itemsoflocal interest. Bob and Jean Kainsingertransferred thescrapbookmaterial into acid-free
pages, assembled them into4 albums, and donated thecollection tothe Village. The historicitemswerefinally on
display in apublicplace.
With approval from theVillage, theWalton Hills Historical ResourceCenterbecame a reality in 1999.
Ever since, asmallgroupofvolunteersstafftheWalton Hills Historical Resource Center. Residents continue to
donatephotos, letters, articles, old maps and otherrelies to the Historical Center, and todaythe Community Room
show cases and cabinetsare packed. .

Origins of the Walton Hills Historical Resource Center
1. Beginning in the 193Os, L. S. Conelly, a local Realtor-Developer, started a collection of
articles, fliers and photos that related to the Walton Hills" part of Bedford Township.
2. Years later L. S. Conelly gave the materials to BettyWalton.
BettyWalton put the papers in a scrapbook, and continued collecting material.
3. In 1980 BettyWalton turned everything over to Joe Mazzone.
4. In 1985 Virginia Mazzone, Joe Mazzone's widow, gave the scrapbook to Jean and Bob
Kainsinger.
5. The currentVillage Hall Community Room, which was completed in 1972,
has nalow hand-crafted showcases and deep hand-crafted cabinets.
For the first 16 years, the showcases were empty and the cabinets held a fewtrophies.
6. When Bob Kainsinger was in Council, the12 years from 1988 through 1999,
he asked Jean to decorate and fill-up the Community Room showcases and cabinets
with items oflocal interest.
7. In 1999 the Kainsingers transferred the scrapbook material into acid-free pages,
assembled them into MUp in Walton Hills" albums,
donated the albums to the
Village,
and put them in the Community Room cabinets.
8. With approval from the Village, the Walton Hills Historical Resource Centerbecame a reality.
9. Volunteers Jean Kainsinger and Ruth Money volunteered toco-chair the
Walton Hills Historical Resource Center
and through theirjointefforts during the pastyears,
theWalton Hills Historical Resource Center has grown from 4 albums to over-flow.
