First to my peerless editor, Tanya Gheen, who read over five hundred
pages and corrected thousands of punctuation and syntactical errors.
She was a meticulous fact-checker and a demanding tutor. She required
that I research and identify original sources of statements or situations
I mentioned casually. Without Tanya’s insistence there would be far
fewer footnotes. My special thanks to Erin Willder, senior editor, who
designed the look of the book and is responsible for the layout, typog-
raphy, placement of illustrations, and shepherding my history through
publication. Erin was ably assisted by her son Liam with scanning
and other tasks. JoAnn Burgi at the Family History Library helped
me learn more about scanning and word processing. She also retyped
my short history of “The Rise of the Ohio Cincinnati Stake” and the
small book, “Memories of Dad” (Addendum). My brother George read
many segments of my history and provided valuable suggestions for
improvement. James Tanner, sans pareil genealogist provided insight-
ful information about the history of FamilySearch. I express my deep-
est appreciation for the BYU Family History Library for my almost
decade-long service as a senior missionary consultant, where I had an
opportunity to research my own family roots, and to write and post
articles about long forgotten family members in the appropriate Mem-
ory pages. I also appreciate the three years during which I spent six or
seven hours each Wednesday typing my history in the incredibly well-
