I hope everyone had a great Labor Day last weekend and that you we able to enjoy
the fantastic weather we had.

Last Sunday, September 4th, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was canonized a Saint by
Pope Francis. She is now known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She is a patron saint of
the pro-life movement. At the National Prayer Breakfast in 1994, she said:

“The greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the
child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself. And if
we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people
not to kill one another? Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its
people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the
greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

These are words from a woman who served the poorest of the poor for over half a century in the slums of
India. As far as the people of India were concerned, she was already a saint; Pope Francis just made it official
last week. What a faith-filled and selfless role model we have in this woman who always put the needs of
others before her own, in particular, those who had no one to care for or represent them.

After Priests for Life, an advocate group that promotes the promotion and preservation of life for all, and other
religious non-profit groups, waged an almost five-year legal battle against the Obama Administration’s HHS
Mandate. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court told these groups and the government that they should sit down
and work things out, as it was their opinion – and these advocate groups – that a solution could be found that
preserved our religious freedom. Those discussions had gotten underway, but then, to the surprise of these
groups, the government opened up the process to public comment.

Therefore, Priests for Life will be holding a webcast on Monday night, September 12 at 8:00 PM, to explain to
concerned citizens how they can lend their voices in support of all the petitioners who have stood firm against
the government’s attempt to make them complicit in the expansion of abortion.

The hour-long webcast will feature Fr. Frank Pavone and attorney Robert Muise of the American Freedom
Law Center. They will explain the importance of letting the Obama administration know that it cannot place
the promotion of abortion and contraception above religious rights.

Now that Pat Freeman has officially assumed the well-deserved title of – RETIRED -- and as our parish
celebrates her time among us over the past thirty years this weekend, we welcome our new Business Manager,
Joe Wojtowicz, who has some big shoes to fill. Joe comes to us with lots of experience, having worked for the
diocese in the area of accounting and also at the parish level as Business Manager. On behalf of our parish

I’d like to conclude my article this week with a beautiful piece entitled – “The Stewardship Prayer.” I had
included this prayer a couple of years ago in the bulletin yet I think it is so good it deserves repeating. It was
given to me by one of our parishioners who saw it in the bulletin of the parish she was visiting.

THE STEWARDSHIP PRAYER
My parish is composed of people like me.
I help make it what it is.
It will be friendly, if I am.
It will be holy, if I am.
Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.
It will do great work, if I work.
It will be prayerful, if I pray.
It will make generous gifts to many causes,
If I am a generous giver.
It will bring others into its worship,
If I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish of loyalty and love,
of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy,
if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.
Therefore, with the help of God,
I now dedicate myself to the task of being
All the things that I want my parish to be.

JOSEPH WOJTOWICZ
OUR NEW PARISH/BUSINESS MANAGER

Hello to the faith community of St. Edna! I am privileged to be chosen to serve you. A li(cid:425)le
background informa(cid:415)on about my journey to this point: I was raised in Elmwood Park, IL,
and graduated from Elmwood Park High School. My parish growing up was St. Vincent
Ferrer in River Forest, IL. I played youth football at St. Vincent’s and a(cid:425)ended CCD there as
well. I met my beau(cid:415)ful and smart wife while she was a senior at Elmwood Park High and
we were married in 1996. I finished up my Bachelor Degree at DePaul University where I
majored in Accoun(cid:415)ng. I worked for 1st Na(cid:415)onal Bank of Chicago in various departments,
ending as a Staff Accountant for the Northwest Division Banking Branches. I then decided
to get a job that was more than a job, a posi(cid:415)on where you could live your ministry. I
worked for the Catholic Church Extension Society for twelve years as their Accoun(cid:415)ng
Manager and Controller. I then worked as an Accountant for the Archdiocese of Chicago
responsible for the accoun(cid:415)ng for twenty-two loca(cid:415)ons. I am now working as a part-(cid:415)me
Business Manager at St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview and St. John Brebeuf in Niles. I look
forward to becoming familiar with your faith community and hope I will serve you well in
the years to come.
